Who will protect me from a languid-eyed slayer?

Do not rival him, O gazelle: he has surpassed you.

    A rising moon upon a bān-tree bough,

may God preserve him, though he lays the lovesick lover bare.

    فارجعي يا غصون عن حركاتك

    He sways with a figure that has bewitched us;

so cease your swaying, O boughs.

O you of wondrous beauty, you have wronged us!

Protection, protection from your deadly assaults!

Yours is an essence through which you have captivated all creatures,

through the varied forms of its beauty drawn from your attributes.

O face, be gentle with lovers.

We are like figures in your mirror.

How many veils lay upon your beautiful face,

made of souls, when you appeared in your essence!

So unveil your face and annihilate the self within us,

and with your life revive the one among us who died of love.

For your sake we sold our souls and found rest

from their affliction; so grant us your attention.

Through everything you have appeared to us,

so we vanished, O light, in your darkness.

At times it is you, and none but you; and we—

at times it is we, and nothing but your signs.

They are our states, which come to us,

all from you, and they are some of your gifts.

I swear by al-Ṣafā and the Marwah of my body,

when I strive, O love, for your pleasure:

I have never turned away from you; so understand, O

soul, even if you were in your moments of heedlessness.

This is the way of those before me who loved

you; through it we dwell in your gardens.
