    Who will aid a yearning lover, enthralled and parched,

    Who took his knowledge from the cheeks of beauties?

    The figures of supple beauties schooled him in religion—

    If they sway, they put brown spears to shame—

    فعصى في اتباعه كل لاحي

    And truly showed him the beauty of the Real;

    So, in following Him, he defied every faultfinder.

    And the falsehood of reproach became something

    Worthless; my betterment lies in shunning it.

    ما على من يحبه من جناح

    My heart flew over the curves of a gazelle;

    No blame falls on whoever loves him.

    He reveals himself with a countenance that guided me

    To my perfection, what is best for me, and my salvation.

    O coarse one who blames me for loving one so subtle,

    Indeed, this reproach is not permitted.

    You sought from me, by God, something impossible:

    How could my glass cease loving my lamp?

    How long will you remain like this, in distress?

    I will not yield to the counselors.

    And if, for you, there is no difference

    Between the color of night's darkness and the color of dawn,

    Do you think the yearning lover is blind like you

    To the sanctuary's lightning and those regions?

    Love beauty, if you desire encounter

    And the union of spirits with spirits.

    كل أطوار وجهه أقداحي

    And cast off restraint for every dark-eyed beauty;

    All the changing aspects of his face are my goblets.

    Breezes blew from within the veil,

    With fragrance, and intoxicated every sober soul.

    She is my beloved; she appeared in a sash,

    In which she embroidered the color of every sash.

    And she swayed proudly, having clothed me

    In her robe, which heralds my exposure.

    فأنا طائر بذاك الجناح

    And she lent me the wing as a token of kinship;

    So I fly with that wing.
