When my beloved appeared to me
To me, he was my musk and perfume.
He was my musk and my sweet herb
والوجهand the face منهof him سبانيtook me captive
والوجه منه سباني
بكلwith every حسنbeauty غريبwondrous
بكل حسن غريب
And his face took me captive
And his face made me forget
With every wondrous charm.
All other strange beauty
قومواrise اشهدواbehold ياO جماعهcompany
قوموا اشهدوا يا جماعه
بدراًa full moon يريكمshows you شعاعهits radiance
بدراً يريكم شعاعه
Rise and behold, O company,
Arise, bear witness, O people
A full moon showing you its radiance.
To a full moon whose radiance you see
ولاand do not تقولواsay غفلناwe were heedless
ولا تقولوا غفلنا
عنof القريبthe Near One المجيبthe One who answers
عن القريب المجيب
And do not say, "We were heedless
And say not you were heedless
Of the Near One who answers."
Of the near, answering friend
حييmay it greet الحياthe rain أرضthe land of نجدNajd
حيي الحيا أرض نجد
مثيرstirring شوقيmy longing ووجديand my rapture
مثير شوقي ووجدي
May the rain greet the land of Najd,
He who enlivens the living, the land of Nejd
Stirring my longing and rapture.
Stirring my passion and ecstasy
ياah طالماhow often ليto me أفادتit has brought
يا طالما لي أفادت
فرطprofusion of البكاweeping والنحيبand sobbing
فرط البكا والنحيب
Ah, how often it has brought me
Long has he brought me benefit
Profuse weeping and sobbing.
With excessive weeping and lament
ياO غصنbough بانbān tree تثنيsway
يا غصن بان تثني
خلleave off الجفاcoldness منكfrom you عناfrom us
خل الجفا منك عنا
O bough of the bān tree, sway;
O bough, cease to curve away
Spare us your coldness,
Leave off disdain toward us
وجدand be generous عليناto us برؤياwith a vision of
وجد علينا برؤيا
هذاthis الجمالthe beauty المهيبawe-inspiring
هذا الجمال المهيب
And grant us a vision of
Find us with the vision
This awe-inspiring beauty.
Of this awe-inspiring beauty
صلاةthe blessing of ربيmy Lord الرحيمthe Merciful
صلاة ربي الرحيم
علىupon النبيthe Prophet الكريمthe noble
على النبي الكريم
May the blessing of my merciful Lord
The prayer of my Lord the Merciful
Be upon the noble Prophet,
Upon the noble Prophet
ماas long as فاقsurpasses عبدAbd (servant of) الغنيal-Ghani (the Self-Sufficient)
ما فاق عبد الغني
فيin المدحpraise كلevery لبيبdiscerning person
في المدح كل لبيب
As long as Abd al-Ghani surpasses
No servant surpassed Al-Ghani
Every discerning person in praise.
In praise, every skillful poet
