Whatever you hope for from a created being

Every matter you hope for from a created being

is liable to some manner of obstruction.

is beset by some kind of hindrance.

وأنا قائل وأستغفر الل

And I say—asking forgiveness of Al—

لست أرضى من فعل إبليس شيئاً

غير ترك السجود للمخلوق

I approve of nothing that Iblis did,

I approve nothing of Iblis's deeds,

save his withholding prostration from a created being.

except refraining from prostration before a created being.

لم يكن بالسجود يأمر ربي

لم يكن بالسجود يأمر ربي

أنهم يسجدون للمخلوق

أنهم يسجدون للمخلوق

My Lord, in commanding prostration, never bade

In commanding prostration, my Lord did not command

them prostrate themselves to a created being.

that they should prostrate before a created being.

وهو الله قد تجلى بفعل

وهو الله قد تجلى بفعل

صادر عنه ظاهر بالحقوق

صادر عنه ظاهر بالحقوق

For He is God, self-revealed through an act

And He is God, who has manifested Himself through an act

issuing from Him, manifest in all realities—

issuing from Him, manifest through truths;

فاعل ما يشاء بالشخص منه

فاعل ما يشاء بالشخص منه

وهو فانٍ مثل الخيال الطروق

وهو فانٍ مثل الخيال الطروق

doing whatever He wills through the person, all from Him,

He does what He wills through the person originating from Him,

while that person fades like a phantom visiting by night.

while that person is transient, like a night-visiting phantom.

حاش لله أمر ربي بكفر

حاش لله أمر ربي بكفر

وسجود لغير رب الشروق

وسجود لغير رب الشروق

God forbid that my Lord should command unbelief,

God forbid that my Lord should command unbelief

or prostration to any but the Lord of sunrise.

and prostration before any but the Lord of sunrise.
