1. نحن الملوك الفُقرا

    في الناس حكمنا جرى

    We, the poor, are kings.

    Our rule has prevailed among the people.

  2. ولا جنود عندنا

    ولا نريد عسكرا

    And we have no soldiers,

    And we desire no army.

  3. ولا لنا مال ولا

    جاهٌ ولا قدرٌ يرى

    And we have no wealth, nor

    Rank, nor standing to be seen.

  4. وما لنا من مسعف

    ولا معين في الورى

    And we have no one to aid us,

    Nor any helper among humankind.

  5. ومن يردْ يدوسنا

    برجله دوس الثرى

    And whoever wishes tramples us

    With his foot, as one tramples dust.

  6. وكم علينا يُعتَدى

    وكم علينا يُفتَرى

    And how often we are wronged,

    And how often we are slandered.

  7. وصبرنا حصن لنا

    من الأذى والافتِرا

    And our patience is a fortress for us

    Against harm and slander.

  8. ونحن لا نحن ولا

    ذات ولا وصف سرى

    And we are not we, nor

    An essence, nor an attribute that has spread.

  9. ولم نزل في عدم

    نقرّ في أمِّ القرى

    And we have always remained in nonbeing.

    We abide in Umm al-Qura, the Mother of Towns.

  10. وهو المحقق الذي

    به نراه لا مِرا

    And He is the truly real One, whom

    We see through Him, beyond dispute.

  11. بل لا يراه غيره

    ومن داره ما درى

    Rather, none but He sees Him,

    And whoever circled Him did not know.
