Through the oud's melody, a trace appeared to me.

It made me understand that we are all forms.

So I said, when the lessons became clear:

Speak of the One, O string.

Whoever lacks firsthand knowledge is delighted by the report.

O oud, how delightful a whisper you are!

Soften the sound for us in intimate companionship,

Of a state firmly founded in love.

And tell of a sacred night:

It was sweet; to me, it was dawn throughout.

Through you, my secret has now come into the open.

And from my passion you stirred what lay concealed.

Be sweet in melody for me, and lovely to hear.

And speak as you wish, for I have an ear

To which the surahs are recited in your melody.

Because of you, all my ribs have melted.

And my eye's tears stream forth.

And your singing rends my ear,

Listening to the Beloved, who makes it hear

Verses of truth that humankind has never heard.

An east wind from Yemen rose for my longing.

And my heart suffers for love.

I said, while our ouds were close together:

O string, set quivering by a beautiful woman!

No, by my father, that is not so, O string!

I have fallen in love with our tanbur's melody.

And I do not forget its morning ringing.

How often I said, when I beheld its splendor:

The One has indeed placed His wisdom within you.

So it is from Him, not you, that innate natures find rapture.
