بتجلى محاسن المحبوبِ
شغفتwere enthralled فيamong الورىhumankind جميعall القلوبِthe hearts
شغفت في الورى جميع القلوبِ
Through the manifestation of the beloved's beauties,
The beloved's beauty manifests,
all hearts among humankind were enthralled.
And passion stirs in all hearts.
بدرa full moon تمٍّfullness سحابهhis cloud كلُّevery شيءٍthing
بدر تمٍّ سحابه كلُّ شيءٍ
نتراآهwe behold him منfrom بروجcelestial mansions الغيوبthe unseen realms
نتراآه من بروج الغيوب
A full moon, whose cloud is everything,
The full moon's cloud covers all,
we behold him from the celestial mansions of the unseen.
We see it from beyond the unseen.
بهرتناdazzled us صفاتُهُhis attributes ففنيناso we vanished
بهرتنا صفاتُهُ ففنينا
وتساوىand became equal شروقهhis rising بالغروبwith setting
وتساوى شروقه بالغروب
His attributes dazzled us, so we vanished,
His qualities dazzled us and we were annihilated,
and his rising equaled his setting.
His rising equals his setting.
باؤهاher bāʾ (letter b) تحتهاbeneath it الحوادثcreated things منهfrom him
باؤها تحتها الحوادث منه
نقطةa dot أسفرتlifted the veil عنfrom المطلوبthe sought-for
نقطة أسفرت عن المطلوب
Her bāʾ—beneath it, created things from him
Beneath it all troubles disappear,
are a dot that unveiled the sought-for.
A bright point that reveals what is sought.
باسمهby his name نحنwe فيin مراتبdegrees of ذاتan essence
باسمه نحن في مراتب ذات
تتجلّىmanifests itself بشأنهاin its state خمرwine of كوبa cup
تتجلّى بشأنها خمر كوب
By his name, we are in the degrees of an essence,
In his name we are in states of being
in whose state a cup's wine manifests itself.
Where the wine of his cup is revealed.
بأبيwith my father as ransom طلعةa face شخصتI gazed intently إليهاtoward it
بأبي طلعة شخصت إليها
حينwhen لاحتit shone forth فلذso became sweet ليto me مشروبيmy drink
حين لاحت فلذ لي مشروبي
May my father be ransom for a face I gazed upon,
Through Abi Talib I perceived them
when it shone forth, and so my drink grew sweet to me.
When the fruit of my drink appeared.
بادرتنيshe hastened to meet me بيوسفwith Joseph الحسنbeauty منهاfrom her
بادرتني بيوسف الحسن منها
لأراهاso I might see her بناظرَيْwith the two eyes of يعقوبJacob
لأراها بناظرَيْ يعقوب
She hastened to me with the Joseph of her beauty,
Yusuf's beauty reminded me of it
so I might behold her with Jacob's two eyes.
To see it with Jacob's eyes.
بعدafter وجديmy ecstasy لاno وجدecstasy فيهاin her لصبٍّfor a lovesick lover
بعد وجدي لا وجد فيها لصبٍّ
فهوfor it is وجدan ecstasy مكفرatoning للذنوبfor sins
فهو وجد مكفر للذنوب
After my ecstasy, there is no ecstasy in her for a lovesick lover;
After finding it no other finding compares,
for it is an ecstasy that atones for sins.
It is bliss that erases sins.
بهواهاthrough love of her تعبّدpracticed devotion القومthe people قبليbefore me
بهواها تعبّد القوم قبلي
وهوand it is دينيmy faith بهthrough it انجلاءthe dispelling of كروبيmy sorrows
وهو ديني به انجلاء كروبي
Through love of her, the people worshipped before me,
Others worshipped its love before me,
and it is my faith; through it my sorrows are dispelled.
It is my faith that dispels sorrows.
بنتI parted عنهاfrom her ولمand did not تبنpart هيshe عنيfrom me
بنت عنها ولم تبن هي عني
منعشreviving ليfor me نسيمهاher breeze بالهبوبby blowing
منعش لي نسيمها بالهبوب
I parted from her, but she did not part from me;
It built me up though I did not build it,
her breeze revives me as it blows.
Its breeze revived me with blowing winds.
