The spirit's birth through setting is a rising,

Like lightning flashing as it rises.

A flash of lightning in the dawn

Issuing from the command's direction within it:

Proceeding from the direction of the command therein

A command of the Real, fulfilled and settled.

A true command, executed, decisive

وبه جسم كل حي وميت

وبه جسم كل حي وميت

دائماً في تكوُّنٍ مطبوعِ

دائماً في تكوُّنٍ مطبوعِ

And through it, the body of every living and dead thing

By it, every living and dead body

Is forever coming into being, stamped with form.

Is ever in constant formation

وتأمل هنا أنابيب ماء

وتأمل هنا أنابيب ماء

جاريات أو التهاب الشموعِ

جاريات أو التهاب الشموعِ

And contemplate here columns of water,

And consider here conduits of water

Flowing, or the flaring of candles.

Flowing, or the kindling of candles

وردة كالدهان ذات بطون

وظهور مع الأصول الفروع

A rose like oil, with hidden depths

A rose like paint with bellies

And outward forms, with roots and branches.

And fronts with roots and branches

قائم كل ذا بأسماء ذات

تتعالى عن مدركات الجموع

تتعالى عن مدركات الجموع

All this subsists through the names of an Essence

Each being, with names of essence

That transcends what the multitudes perceive.

Transcending the perceptions of the masses

ذات حق ما ثم في الكون إلا

ذات حق ما ثم في الكون إلا

هي والكون بالتجدد روعي

The Essence of the Real: nothing is in the cosmos but

The true essence, there is naught in the universe

It; and the cosmos is maintained through renewal.

Except it, and the universe in renewal amazed

هي ذاتٌ لها صفاتٌ وأفعا

هي ذاتٌ لها صفاتٌ وأفعا

ل ولا غير عند أهل الخشوع

ل ولا غير عند أهل الخشوع

It is an Essence with attributes and acts—

It is an essence having attributes and deeds

And no other, for those of humble reverence.

And none other with the people of humility

فلهذا نقول نحن بأنا

فلهذا نقول نحن بأنا

هي أي عين فعلها المجموع

هي أي عين فعلها المجموع

For this reason, we say that we are

Thus we say, with our self

It—that is, the very totality of Its action.

It is the same as its entire act

لا بأنا أيْ ذاتها إذ جنونٌ

لا بأنا أيْ ذاتها إذ جنونٌ

عينُ هذا المقال للمخدوع

عينُ هذا المقال للمخدوع

Not that we are Its Essence, for madness

Not with our self, its essence, for that is madness

Is precisely this assertion of the deluded.

The core of this saying for the deceived

وإذا كان فعلها مثل برق

وإذا كان فعلها مثل برق

لامع في صدورها والرجوع

And if Its action is like lightning,

And if its act is like a flash of lightning

Flashing in its issuing forth and return,

Gleaming in its breasts and retreat

ما له في العيان قط وقوفٌ

صح أنا هي استمع مسموعي

Never standing still in the visible realm,

Having no standing at all in manifestation

It is true that we are It; listen to what I have heard.
