The gist of Ibn al-Rifa‘i’s words was this:

The article by Ibn al-Rif'a'i, its essence was

Longing for the Chosen One’s chamber, he communed with it.

Longing for the chamber of the Chosen One that pervades it

قد جاء هائم ناداها يسائلها

قد جاء هائم ناداها يسائلها

في حالة البعد روحي كنت أرسلها

في حالة البعد روحي كنت أرسلها

He came love-distraught, called to it, and entreated it:

He came wandering, calling out to it, asking it

When far away, I used to send my soul,

In the state of distance, my soul I was sending to it

تقبّل الأرض عني وهي نائبتي

تقبّل الأرض عني وهي نائبتي

لواعج الشوق في أحشائه استعرت

لواعج الشوق في أحشائه استعرت

To kiss the earth on my behalf, acting as my deputy.

The earth accepts from me, and it is my deputy

Longing’s burning pangs blazed in his depths,

The fires of longing in his depths were kindled

والقلب يرعد والأجفان قد مطرت

والقلب يرعد والأجفان قد مطرت

يا طالما عين قلبي وجهك انتظرت

يا طالما عين قلبي وجهك انتظرت

The heart trembled, and the eyelids rained tears.

And my heart quivers and my eyelids have rained

Oh, how long my heart’s eye has awaited your face!

Oh how many times the eye of my heart your face awaited

وهذه دولة الأشباح قد حضرت

وهذه دولة الأشباح قد حضرت

فامدد يمينك كي تحظى بها شفتي

فامدد يمينك كي تحظى بها شفتي

And now the turn of bodily forms has come;

And this is the state of specters that has come

So extend your right hand, that my lip may be graced by it.

So extend your right hand that my lips may enjoy it
