The gazelle of that sanctuary has put an end to my patience.

Impossible for my heart to escape his hands!

By God, O driver of the caravans in the wilderness,

Greet the playgrounds of Salʿ and its valley,

And greet its dwellers and alight at its meeting place.

My hearing, which on the day of parting became their hearing,

And in harm itself I have found their benefit.

Halt on the sandy tracts: my root has become their branch.

And seek my heart when you behold their dwelling,

Among the tents, for I have left it there.

Alas, neither my soul nor my body remains to me.

O driver of the caravan—nay, all of me has perished for him.

Those are the dwellings: be in them, yet be not.

And recall my longings there, and describe my sorrow,

And say: 'Who will heal the sufferer from your love?'

I am the one called, in illusion, your servant.

And my ecstasy toward you is your very ecstasy.

And by your right, meeting you is, for me, sheer loss of you.

O neighbors of the encampment, you have been cruel in your distance

To a youth whose highest wish is nearness to you.

How often, in love for you, has longing revealed his intent

To others, until his entire inward self was folded away.

All identities have become his identity.

He would all but meet his death from your absence,

Were it not for a dream-phantom that comes to his rescue.

I have never found anything in existence that pleases me,

Unless I see it as built before me through you and from you.

And by the mystery of your countenance, O dwellers in my body,

I yearn longingly for the valley, and I am stirred

By the doves' lament just before dawn throughout its reaches.

How many a garden of intimacy with you has had its bud-sheaths split open,

So its breezes were stirred by the fragrance of remembrance.

And the bough of my coming into being—how constantly I sustain it!

And when its doves lament, there comes upon me

An ecstasy that melts the heart at the remembrance of its people.

For this world's devout one and its sinner,

There are states of sincerity, for its seeker and its forsaker.

O Saʿd, take my state from the giving of its restrainer.

If the water of my tears overflows from their sockets,

Drink no water except from its channels.
