    The Creator is not overtaken, O people,

    in His creation, by drowsiness or sleep.

    والجسم نوم فيه مرغومُ

    For drowsiness overtakes the spirit through Him;

    and the body lies subdued in sleep.

    And God, above spirit and above body,

    is exalted indeed; no concept can portray Him.

    Whatever is in the heavens is His, and they are the

    spirits, leader after leader.

    And likewise whatever is in the earth, which is His—

    I mean the bodies; and that is set down.

    And He is the Giver of Death, for He is forever

    living, the Sustainer over all created worlds.

    So when He causes death, He makes us manifest; and when

    He gives life, we become hidden, and He is known.

    منه كتابٌ جاء مرقوم

    In Ayat al-Kursi there are lessons for us;

    from Him has come a book, inscribed.

    وما سواه فهو موهوم

    The Real, through the Real, has made us real in Him;

    and whatever is other than Him is imagined.

    وشرْبُ أهل الجهل زقوم

    Through Him my drink is Kawthar, sweet;

    and the drink of the ignorant is Zaqqum.
