ماnot اصطكاكclashing الأجرامthe bodies عندduring السماعِlistening
ما اصطكاك الأجرام عند السماعِ
عبثidle play فليعيso let him heed كلاميmy words واعيa mindful person
عبث فليعي كلامي واعي
The clashing of bodies during listening is not
The clanging of bodies is no idle talk
idle play; so let the mindful heed my words.
Let the perceptive grasp my words
ولهذاand for this reason قالsaid الإلهGod تعيهاretains it
ولهذا قال الإله تعيها
إذنٌan ear قدindeed وعتhas understood بقصدwith the aim of انتفاعbenefiting
إذنٌ قد وعت بقصد انتفاع
And so God said that it is retained
Thus has God commanded, understand
by an ear that has understood, seeking benefit.
A permission granted with benefit in mind
رنةa ringing sound بعدafter رنةa ringing sound بعدafter أخرىanother
رنة بعد رنة بعد أخرى
صورforms تنجليunfold علىto الأسماعthe ears
صور تنجلي على الأسماع
One ringing after another, then another:
Note after note, one after the other
forms unfolding to the ears.
Forms unfold upon the ears
يدركperceives الغافلthe heedless one الظواهرoutward aspects منهاof them
يدرك الغافل الظواهر منها
والفهيمand the discerning one الذيwho لهhe has طولlength باعarmspan
والفهيم الذي له طول باع
The heedless perceive their outward aspects,
The heedless perceives the phenomena
and the discerning one has a long reach,
While the wise endowed with breadth
ولهand he has الإعتبارreflection فيin كلevery شيءthing
وله الإعتبار في كل شيء
قربnearness شبرa handspan لهfor him وقربand nearness ذراعa cubit
قرب شبر له وقرب ذراع
and finds a lesson in everything.
Considers all with care
His is a handspan's nearness, and a cubit's nearness.
A span's length has meaning to him, and an arm's
سامعa listener كلهall of him بروحthrough a spirit شريفnoble
سامع كله بروح شريف
لاnot بإذنٍthrough an ear للنفسbelonging to the self ذاتpossessing النزاعcontention
لا بإذنٍ للنفس ذات النزاع
He listens with his whole being, through a noble spirit,
Hearing all with a noble spirit
not through an ear belonging to the contentious self.
Not with the ear prone to conflict
يترقىascends بهthrough it المريدthe seeker علوماًbranches of knowledge
يترقى به المريد علوماً
منfrom دعاوىclaims الهوىdesire وحكمand the rule of الطباعnatural dispositions
من دعاوى الهوى وحكم الطباع
Through it the seeker rises in knowledge,
With it the disciple ascends in knowledge
away from desire's claims and the rule of natural dispositions.
Above the pretensions of passion and nature's judgements
قدindeed أفادتهhas granted him طاعةobedience to اللهGod هذاthis
قد أفادته طاعة الله هذا
بكمالthrough perfection of اقتداemulation وحسنand goodness of اتِّباعfollowing
بكمال اقتدا وحسن اتِّباع
Obedience to God has indeed granted him this,
Such obedience to God has granted him
through perfect emulation and good adherence.
Perfection in following and excellent compliance
مقتفfollowing أثرthe trail of سنةthe Prophetic tradition وكتابand the Book
مقتف أثر سنة وكتاب
فعلthe practice of أسلافهhis forebears أولىpossessors of الإجماعconsensus
فعل أسلافه أولى الإجماع
Following the trail of the Sunnah and the Book,
Tracing the way of sunnah and book
as did his forebears, the people of consensus.
Acting like the predecessors, foremost in consensus
هذهthis حالناour state وحالand the state of شيوخspiritual masters
هذه حالنا وحال شيوخ
قدindeed دعاناhas summoned us منهمfrom among them علىin الغيبthe unseen داعيa caller
قد دعانا منهم على الغيب داعي
This is our state, and the state of spiritual masters
Such is our state and the state of shaykhs
from among whom a caller has summoned us in the unseen.
Summoned by a caller though unseen
