قفstand ههناhere بينbetween العذيبal-ʿUdhayb وبارقِand Bāriq
قف ههنا بين العذيب وبارقِ
وانظرand look ترىyou will see الأكوانthe worlds لمعةa flash بارقِof lightning
وانظر ترى الأكوان لمعة بارقِ
Stand here between al-ʿUdhayb and Bāriq,
Stand here between the sweet herbs and lightning
and look: you will see the worlds as a flash of lightning.
And look, you will see the universes sparkling
قومa people مضواhave passed away ولسوفand surely will قومٌa people غيرهمother than them
قوم مضوا ولسوف قومٌ غيرهم
يأتونwill come كالماءlike water السريعswift الدافقgushing
يأتون كالماء السريع الدافق
A people have passed away, and surely other people
People passed and indeed other people
will come like swift, gushing water.
Will come like the fast flowing water
قرأتread كتابthe Book اللهof God باللهthrough God الحجىthe intellect
قرأت كتاب الله بالله الحجى
مناof ours وقدand indeed جاءتcame بعلمwith knowledge حقائقof truths
منا وقد جاءت بعلم حقائق
Through God, God's Book was read by the intellect
I read the book of God, with God the protector
within us, and it brought knowledge of truths.
It came with the knowledge of the truth
قبلتaccepted تجليthe manifestation الحقof the Real فيin أكوانهHis worlds
قبلت تجلي الحق في أكوانه
والغيرwhile others مفتونbeguiled بفانby what is transient زاهقperishing
والغير مفتون بفان زاهق
It accepted the Real's manifestation in His worlds,
I accepted the manifestation of truth in its universes
while others are beguiled by what fades and perishes.
While others are infatuated with the vanishing world
قالواthey said هيthese are الأعيانthe substances والأعراضand the accidents لمdid not
قالوا هي الأعيان والأعراض لم
يدرواthey know سوىbeyond ألفاظthe words نطقof the speech الناطقof the speaker
يدروا سوى ألفاظ نطق الناطق
They said, 'These are substances and accidents'; they did not
They said it's entities and incidents. They only knew
know anything beyond the words of the speaker's speech.
Words uttered by the speaker
قمrise ياO نديمdrinking companion إلىtoward كؤوسcups شرابناof our drink
قم يا نديم إلى كؤوس شرابنا
ذاكthat القديمthe Eternal One بداappeared بخلقthrough creating خلائقcreatures
ذاك القديم بدا بخلق خلائق
Rise, O drinking companion, to the cups of our drink:
Rise, my friend, to our wine cups
That Eternal One appeared through the creation of creatures.
That ancient one who began creating creations
قربتwere brought near إليهto Him بهthrough Him القلوبthe hearts وأبعدتand were kept far
قربت إليه به القلوب وأبعدت
عنهfrom Him النفوسthe souls لربطهاbecause they are bound بعلائقto attachments
عنه النفوس لربطها بعلائق
Through Him hearts were drawn near to Him, and kept far
I drew near to Him with it the hearts and distanced
from Him were souls, because they were bound to attachments.
From Him the souls to bind them with causes
قيدthe bond الكوائنof beings مطلقunbound فوجودناthus our existence
قيد الكوائن مطلق فوجودنا
نورa light يلوحshines لسابقfor one who precedes وللاحقand for one who follows
نور يلوح لسابق وللاحق
The bond of beings is unbound; thus our existence
The liberator of existences, our existence
is a light shining for those before and those after.
Is light that shines for the predecessor and the successor
قنعتwas content بهwith Him عينيmy eye فلمand did not ترsee غيرهother than Him
قنعت به عيني فلم تر غيره
والقلبand the heart هامwas enraptured بهby Him بعزمwith resolve صادقsincere
والقلب هام به بعزم صادق
My eye was content with Him and saw none but Him,
My eyes were content with Him, they saw none but Him
and the heart was enraptured by Him with sincere resolve.
And my heart roamed with Him with true determination
قدindeed كنتI was أحسبهthinking Him to be الذيthe one whom صورتهI pictured Him
قد كنت أحسبه الذي صورته
فإذاthen behold المصورthe fashioner والمصورthe fashioned خالقيmy Creator
فإذا المصور والمصور خالقي
I had thought Him to be the one I pictured;
I used to think He was the One I imagined
then behold: the fashioner and the fashioned are my Creator.
But it was the Creator and the Created, my Creator
