Praise be to God: no rank and no wealth,

only knowledge of God and the spiritual state.

So I do not fear for rank that may vanish, nor

wealth against which a hand acts unjustly and schemes.

I have branches of knowledge, but for them I have no one

among the people in our age today who can bear them.

I spread them among people, and am misled

by some professing belief, while others are tale-bearers.

They blame me for divulging them, while I

fear that punishments will overtake me for concealing them.

A curse from God has come in the Qur'an upon whoever

conceals an elucidation sent down in the Remembrance.

I only disclose them; belief arises in one endowed with

guidance, while one beset by misguidance denies them.

Alas for them! Whenever they listen to them, they find

acceptance of them, but the burdens it brings overwhelm them.

So they turn away, content with what they have understood,

and understanding them without spiritual taste is fruitless.

The upshot is that some have nothing

of them in earnest except hearsay and chatter.

My entire creed is the Qur'an in its entirety,

and the Chosen One's tradition—knowledge and deeds.

And God, through unveiling, makes clear to me from these two what

the champions among the people have not prepared themselves for.

A spiritual taste through which I almost know unseen things, without

    understanding—yet faith is potent.

And humility and brokenness—the heart embraces

    them always, without any lapse.

And amid harm I have patience and endurance,

and I do not neglect to await victory.

You see, I possess the details of the knowledge of God,

while others besides us have only its broad outlines.

Religion is sacred law made manifest; spiritual reality has

circled it and encompassed it, and consists of spiritual states.

Land and sea are both God's religion, so do not

disbelieve in either of them, lest you be struck down.

Be a believer in both; if they have no

power within you, then turn toward the All-Merciful.

Say: their believer in sacred law, but not spiritual reality,

or in spiritual reality, but not sacred law, is an impostor.

And a believer in both is in a garden and on lofty heights,

yet occupations keep him from the self-disclosure of the Real,

because he has no spiritual taste to establish him

in the Real, and his heart is heedless of Him.

    And the possessor of spiritual taste is a secret not to be divulged;

he never has any perplexity concerning things.

God is greatest! This religion I have spoken of

in its entirety; others have their own sayings about it.

    أو لا فذلك للباغين تمثال

    So whoever finds right guidance in it embraces it as faith;

otherwise, it is a likeness for seekers.
