O you who have been heedless, your faces are black,

and your lord is born in imagination.

    أنتم عبيد وذاك معبود

    Your imagination has begotten a god for you;

you are slaves, and that is what you worship.

And you deny that Being, your Creator,

    is God, though He exists.

If our Lord were not Being, He would be

    understood as impossible nonbeing.

He would be the imagination of those who have worshipped

their imagination; the ignoramus is kept far away.

Far be it—never could our Creator be

other than Being, to whom bounty belongs.

And He encompasses us and things—

all of them, denier and denied.

Through Him the heavens shone, and through Him the

earth in its entirety, and the branch put forth leaves.

Are you content that imagination gives you

a lord, while no boulder is in Being,

    nor does this Being sustain

your worlds, the youth, and the lovely maiden?

Imagination is darkness, all of it, and whatever

appears to you from it is rejected.

And our Lord—ours, and our Creator—

is true Being; all besides Him is nonexistent.

    وهو قريب لنا ومعهود

    And that is the meaning of 'wherever you are';

and He is near to us and known.

nearer than our jugular vein, as

He said, and guiding masters have said it.

And we are nothing, perishing and passing

away through Him; and He—He—is witnessed.

For this reason, our faces tomorrow will be

white, while you—your faces will be black.

Our faces are white because our Creator

is our existence, the light, and He is blessed.

But your lord is in your imagination, and through him

your faces are bound to blackness.

The darkness of imagination has appeared in you, and already

a roasting spit has kindled it in the blaze.

Turn aside from our path, and stand

as did the people whose warner was Hud.

For this Being is mighty and indeed

exalted; this Being is not limited.

He has no form, nor does He have

a second; affirming His oneness is praiseworthy.

    والكم والكيف عنه مطرود

    He has no equal—certainly not—nor any likeness;

quantity and quality are excluded from Him.

Yet eyes see Him—exalted is He—but do not

encompass Him; the door to that is shut.

Solomon's kingship came from Him, just as

David was a vicegerent on His behalf.

His essence does not resemble other essences, nor

are His attributes like other attributes, O worms.

    عزم لكم في الرشاد مخمود

    Like worms, you are weak in your constitution;

your resolve for right guidance is quenched.

Rise; witness that He is Being for you,

for your day, like everyone's, is numbered.

    لا يَحْجِبَنْكُمْ للنفس أخدود

    And He is plainly visible to everyone with sight;

let no trench of the self veil you.

Whoever is blind in this life, tomorrow

will be blind there, and the crop will be reaped.

The text of God's Book is our proof,

and the pearl necklace of hadith is strung in order.
