1. يا من يمد لأخلاق القلوب يدا

    فيبدل الغيَّ من طغيانها رشدا

    O you who extend a hand to the dispositions of hearts,

    Turning error born of their rebellion into right guidance,

  2. ويحفظ السوء منها كي يجانبه

    ويغسل القلب منه فاسمع العددا

    And keep their evil in mind so as to avoid it,

    And cleanse the heart of it—hear the enumeration:

  3. كفر وجهل وغدر والخيانة مع

    كبر وعجب وإخلاف لما وعدا

    Unbelief, ignorance, treachery, and betrayal, together with

    Arrogance, self-conceit, and failure to keep one's promises;

  4. وحب جاه وخوف الذم جربزة

    سخط القضاء كذا في الحق إن مردا

    And love of prestige, fear of blame, cunning;

    Resentment of the decree; likewise, rebellion against the truth;

  5. والأمن واليأس حب المدح مع حسد

    بخل رياءٌ نفاق والخمور بدا

    And feeling secure, despair, love of praise, along with envy;

    Miserliness, ostentation, hypocrisy, and wine, now manifest;

  6. وبدعة سفه حرص مداهنة

    وسوء ظن وتسويف بطول مدى

    And religious innovation, folly, greed, insincere flattery;

    And mistrust, and procrastination over a long span;

  7. غش وإنس بمخلوق كذا جزع

    وخفة وعناد بغض أهل هدى

    Deceit, familiarity with a created being, likewise impatience;

    And frivolity, obstinacy, hatred of the people of guidance;

  8. والجبن والذل والإسراف مع طمع

    شماتة ومحاكاة لفعل عدا

    And cowardice, abasement, extravagance, along with covetousness;

    Gloating, and imitation of enemies' conduct;

  9. والحزن والخوف في الدنيا وشهوتها

    غباوة شره إصرار من فسدا

    And sorrow and fear over worldly life, and craving for it;

    Stupidity, gluttony, the persistence of one who is corrupt;

  10. تهور صلف ثم اتباع هوى

    وللبطالة أن تلقاه معتمدا

    Recklessness, boastfulness, then following one's whims;

    And finding him relying on idleness;

  11. وحب دنيا وحب الظالمين وأن

    يُعَلِّقَ القلب بالأسباب والكبدا

    And love of worldly life, love of wrongdoers, and

    Attaching the heart and liver to means;

  12. وحب مال وتقليد فظاظته

    وقاحة فتنة مع كونه حقدا

    And love of wealth, imitation, and his harshness;

    Shamelessness, discord, along with his being rancorous;

  13. تطيُّر وكذا استعجاله أمل

    كفران نعمة من أولى إليه يدا

    Belief in ill omens, and likewise his haste and hope;

    Ingratitude for the favor of one who lent him a hand.

  14. فهذه جملة الأخلاق قد جمعت

    ستين كن في النقا منهن مجتهدا

    These traits, then, have been gathered in full—

    Sixty; be diligent in purifying yourself of them.
