يا من ظهرت بنوره الأكوان
أنتYou الظاهرthe Manifest One
أنت الظاهر
O You, by whose light the worlds appeared,
O You who appeared with Your light upon the cosmos
You are the Manifest One.

حتىuntil كانواthey existed معdespite أنهمthat they ماnot كانواthey existed
حتى كانوا مع أنهم ما كانوا
أمرa matter باهرwondrous
أمر باهر
Until they came to be, though they were not—
Even though they were not, along with the fact that they were
A wondrous thing.
A marvelous command
فيin الغيبةabsence والحضورand presence لاno إنسانhuman being
في الغيبة والحضور لا إنسان
غيرother than القاهرthe Subduer
غير القاهر
In absence and presence, there is no human being
In absence and presence, no human
Other than the Subduer.
Other than the Subduer
هذاthis شانa state يبدوappears ويخفىand is hidden شانa state
هذا شان يبدو ويخفى شان
غرguileless ماهرadept
غر ماهر
This is a state that appears and is hidden—a state
This is an affair that appears and disappears, an affair
Of a guileless adept.
Not clever
قلبيmy heart بيتa house لهfor Him علىin keeping with التنزيهdivine transcendence
قلبي بيت له على التنزيه
والنفسand the self حجابa veil
والنفس حجاب
My heart is His house, in keeping with His transcendence,
My heart is a house for You upon transcendence
And the self is a veil.
And the self is a veil
يبدوHe appears مناfrom us لناto us بلاwithout تشبيهcomparison
يبدو منا لنا بلا تشبيه
ماءwater وحبابand bubbles
ماء وحباب
He appears from us to us, without comparison:
You appear to us from us without depiction
Water and bubbles.
Water and mist
لاnot يخرجgoes out عنهfrom Him كلevery شيءthing فيهin Him
لا يخرج عنه كل شيء فيه
والشيءand the thing سرابa mirage
والشيء سراب
Nothing goes beyond Him; everything is in Him,
Everything within it does not leave it
And the thing is a mirage.
And all is a mirage
حقTruth والكلand all باطلfalsehood يدريهknows it
حق والكل باطل يدريه
قلبa heart طاهرpure
قلب طاهر
He is Truth, and all is falsehood; this is known
True and everything else knows false
By a pure heart.
A pure heart
فيin أيمنthe right-hand side of رامةRāmah وذاكand that الواديthe valley
في أيمن رامة وذاك الوادي
مخضوبdyed بنانfingertips
مخضوب بنان
On the right of Rāmah and in that valley
In the right valley of yearning and that valley
Is one with dyed fingertips.
Dyed with anemones
إنif عَرَّضَalluded indirectly باسمهto His name وغنىand sang الحاديthe camel-driver
إن عَرَّضَ باسمه وغنى الحادي
ناديتI cried out أمانprotection
ناديت أمان
If the camel-driver hinted at His name and sang,
If he presented Your name and the singer sang
I cried out, 'Protection!'
I called out “Safety!”
هذاthis عبدʿAbd (servant) الغنيal-Ghanī (the Self-Sufficient) نحوtoward الهاديthe Guide
هذا عبد الغني نحو الهادي
مصروفturned عنانreins
مصروف عنان
This is ʿAbd al-Ghanī; toward the Guide
This is Abd al-Ghani towards the Guide
His reins are turned.
Reined in
يهديهhe offers Him تحيةa greeting المشوقthe yearning one الصاديthe thirsty one
يهديه تحية المشوق الصادي
ساهيheedless ساهرwakeful
ساهي ساهر
He offers Him the greeting of the yearning, thirsty one,
May he greet the passionate longing of the wakeful
Heedless, yet wakeful.
