1. بدا جمال حبيبي

    والكل قد غابوا

    My beloved’s beauty appeared,

    and all the others vanished.

  2. والمضنى أفنى لا يرفق

    بالمغرم العاني

    And the tormentor annihilated me, showing no mercy

    to the love-stricken captive.

  3. والوجه منه نصيبي

    والحسن جلباب

    And his face is my portion,

    and beauty is a mantle

  4. لي أغنى أقنى قد أشرق

    في عين إنسان

    for me. He enriched and endowed, and shone forth

    in a human eye.

  5. وفوق قلبي خطيبي

    للسر وهاب

    And above my heart is my preacher,

    a lavish giver of the secret.

  6. والأدنى أدنى بالأبرق

    فرد بلا ثاني

    And the nearest brought me near at al-Abraq,

    one alone, without a second.

  7. يا صاحبي فاقتدي بي

    إني أنا الباب

    O my companion, follow my example;

    indeed, I am the gate.

  8. فالمعنى معنا ما أفرق

    عن سر روحاني

    For the meaning is with us; I do not part

    from a spiritual secret.

  9. يا واحداً قد تثنّى

    فأشركوا فيه

    O One who has become two,

    so they ascribed partners to him.

  10. والساقي باقي يسقيني

    بكأسه الصافي

    And the cupbearer remains, giving me to drink

    from his pure cup.

  11. ونلت ما أتمنى

    والغير في التيه

    And I attained what I desire,

    while others are lost in bewilderment.

  12. والراقي واقي يحميني

    عن السوا كافي

    And the healer is a protector, guarding me

    from all else, sufficient for me.

  13. ومن يشاهدْ تَهَنَّى

    من غير تمويه

    And whoever beholds finds bliss,

    without deception.

  14. أشواقي لاقى تغنيني

    عن كل أوصافي

    He met my longings; they make me independent

    of all my attributes.

  15. في النور كان مغيبي

    والكون أسباب

    My vanishing was in the light,

    and the cosmos consists of causes.

  16. والحسنى أسنى لي أحرق

    وجه له داني

    And the fairest is most radiant to me; he has burned

    a face drawing near to him.

  17. صلى إله البرايا

    ربي على المختار

    May the God of creation send blessings—

    my Lord—upon the Chosen One,

  18. ذي المجد يجدي بالإحسان

    للبائس الراجي

    the glorious one, who bestows kindness

    on the wretched one who hopes.

  19. طه شريف المزيا

    من جاء بالأسرار

    Taha, noble in his virtues,

    who came with the mysteries.

  20. للرفد يفدي مما كان

    فكلهم ناجي

    To give aid, he ransoms them from whatever befell,

    so all of them are saved.

  21. عبد الغني بالعطايا

    مشعشع الأنوار

    Abd al-Ghani, through the gifts,

    is radiant with lights.

  22. لي وجدي يجدي بالألحان

    في الغيهب الساجي

    My ecstasy benefits me through melodies

    in the still, deep darkness,

  23. ما جدول بالصبيب

    في الروض ينساب

    as long as a brook, with flowing water,

    runs through the garden.

  24. أواهنا وهنا مذ أطرق

    ريان الأغصان

    Our sighing one is weak since he bowed his head—

    the one whose branches are well-watered.
