    Love has melted the spirit, the soul, and the body,

    leaving the yearning lover neither substance nor trace.

    And separation's hand spent a measure of endurance,

    and utterly eradicated for us the malady of seeking solace.

    For Salma, we forgot precious souls,

    and names of ours; we retained neither self nor name.

    She is the treasure, and the dense body is her wall.

    If the supplicant is ignorant, through her he fills with knowledge.

    And nearness is nothing but distance from her, for she

    is our opposite, since through her we were an illusion.

    She is the intellect—nay, she is all meanings.

    She is sensation and what is sensed, whether particular or universal.

    So if you seek to draw near to her, then through her be

    distant; and if you seek to understand her, relinquish understanding.

    And stand before her; let go of your standing, letting go

    of your letting go; you will unveil a crescent made full through her.

    And beware of approaching her with the self,

    and beware of taking rest apart from her, supposedly through her.

    And join her through what comes from her, and incline toward her tavern,

    with an inclination you see has surely come from her direction.

    وإلا فعن آثارها لم تزل أعمى

    And look upon her traces with her eyes;

    otherwise, you remain blind to her traces.

    فإنك إن تسمع بها تُسمِعِ الصما

    And hear no sounds except through her hearing;

    for if you hear through her, you will make the deaf hear.

    تُجِبْك رجالٌ نحوها ألفوا الهما

    And call out through her among the people, and listen to the call;

    men accustomed to sorrow for her will answer you.

    ترى الشمس تهدي من سنا عقلك النجما

    And, for her, remove her veils from the face of your self;

    you will see the sun guide the star by the radiance of your intellect.

    فما فائزٌ إلا بما خصَّه سهما

    And do not concern yourself with everyone, if they lose their way or stray;

    for none succeeds except through the portion specially allotted to him.
