Leave the deniers and disavowers, for they are

our veils, meant to screen out outsiders,

stretched out from the unseen in dense form; and they arise from

the manifestation of His name, the Veiler, Lord of gifts.

Thus He protected us through them, like pearls in the shell of otherness,

and like an eye guarded by eyelids beneath the brows.

No king exists but his chamberlains about him

encircle him closely with lances and keen blades.

And a treasure has guardians, and within it are talismans,

by which it is protected among people from a seeker's grasp.

You spoke truly: they are the envious; the fire of their hearts

has indeed wafted sweet fragrances from our aloeswood.

And through them He kept the kernel of our knowledge from them—

the God of all creatures, through husks that deprive them.

And indeed He kept them from drinking at our Prophet's pool,

here with us, through an overpowering alteration born of illusion.

Fancies of thought were unleashed from the unseen

by angels from them, through them, in fitting correspondence.

And the water springing from the earth is foul or pure,

according to its quality; such is the diversity of drinking sources.
