It is the sacred influx, shattering like a torrent;
He is the sanctified stream, like a torrent that smashes
So the heart cannot conceal it.
So the heart cannot conceal that
جرىflowed فيin مجاريchannels الروحthe spirit منfrom حضرةthe Presence of العلىthe heights
فصادفناso it found us نهواهwe love it والقلبand the heart مغرمenamored
It coursed through the spirit's channels from the Presence on high;
It flowed in the channels of the soul from the presence of the Most High
So it found us loving it, the heart enamored.
So we met its breeze, and the heart is enamored
فنلقيهso we utter it نظماًas verse تارةsometimes بكلامناin our words
ونلقيهand we utter it نثراًas prose عندbefore منone who هوhe يفهمunderstands
So sometimes we voice it as verse in our own words,
Thus we cast it into poetry at times with our words
And we voice it as prose before one who understands.
And we cast it into prose for one who understands

We relieve ourselves of what its impact makes us suffer,
We relieve ourselves of what we suffer from its impact
For its onslaught is overpowering, and so is its dominion.
For its control is overwhelming and overpowering

To it belong our effacement at times, and at times our abiding;
It makes us vanish at times and at others makes us firm
And through it we revel in a paradise.
And we through it are in bliss and comfort

Lo, 'Good morning!' was what those before us said
Oh what a morning the words of one who spoke before us
To it; we said 'and evening,' to complete it.
To Him in the evening we say to fulfill

He is the Hidden, the unknown One, who is not known.
He is the hidden, unknown to one who does not know

We knew Him—not that we knew Him as
We knew Him, not that we knew Him as we knew
We knew what is other than Him; in Him all else is annihilated.
Others besides Him, and otherness in Him ceases to exist

Far, far removed, the eternal existence cannot
Does our knowing point to it or express it.
