صح عندي في منزل الإختصاصِ
إنindeed حالstate العوامthe common folk حالstate الخواصِthe elect
إن حال العوام حال الخواصِ
It has proved true to me, in the station of distinction:
I am an expert in my own home
Indeed, the common folk's state is the state of the elect.
Yet the lives of commoners and nobles are one
صفوserenity عيشlife بواحدthrough One يتجلَّىmanifests Himself
صفو عيش بواحد يتجلَّى
لكنbut الفرقthe difference نيةintention الإخلاصsincerity
لكن الفرق نية الإخلاص
Life's serenity comes through One who manifests Himself,
Blessed sustenance manifests itself through the One
But the difference lies in the intent to be sincere.
But the difference lies in sincere devotion
صبوةpassion تورثbequeaths العلومknowledge وأخرىand another
صبوة تورث العلوم وأخرى
تنتجproduces الجهلَignorance ماnot لهاfor it منany خلاصdeliverance
تنتج الجهلَ ما لها من خلاص
One passion bequeaths knowledge, while another
Some youth inherit knowledge while others
Produces ignorance, with no deliverance for it.
Produce ignorance, for them there is no salvation
صدقhas spoken truly اللهGod إنماonly هيthey أسماnames
صدق الله إنما هي أسما
قدalready تسمّتhave been named ولاتand it is not حينa time مناصescape
قد تسمّت ولات حين مناص
God has spoken truly: they are only names
God speaks the truth, they are but names
That have been named—and now is no time for escape.
That were named, when there was escape
صومfasting هذاthis one وفرطand excess هذاthis one عنaway from الغيthe oth- (continues next line)
صوم هذا وفرط هذا عن الغي
ر-er (completes 'the other') والعينand the essence عينessence منwhoever فيin الصياصيthe fortresses
ر والعين عين من في الصياصي
This one's fasting and that one's excess—away from the oth-
This one fasts while the other indulges
er; and the essence is the essence of whoever is in the fortresses.
And the eye is an eye among the archers
صاحO friend هذاthis المقامthe station والقومand the people فيهin it
صاح هذا المقام والقوم فيه
فاقتحمso plunge into حربهits battle بدرعwith a coat of mail دلاصsmooth
فاقتحم حربه بدرع دلاص
O friend, this is the station, and the people are within it;
This station calls and its people are in it
So plunge into its battle with a smooth coat of mail.
So storm its war with an impenetrable armor
صائبtrue of aim النبلthe arrows إنif رميتَyou shoot وإلاand otherwise
صائب النبل إن رميتَ وإلا
كنbe مهيّاًprepared لوقعfor the impact of هذاthis الرصاصthe lead shot
كن مهيّاً لوقع هذا الرصاص
Let your arrows strike true if you shoot; otherwise,
If you shoot arrows of nobility, O archer
Be ready for the impact of this lead shot.
Else be ready for the blow of this bullet
صبحdawn كشفunveiling وليلand a night عقلreason وماذاand what
صبح كشف وليل عقل وماذا
بعدbeyond حقtruth سوىexcept الضلالerror لعاصيfor one who disobeys
بعد حق سوى الضلال لعاصي
A dawn of unveiling and a night of reason—and what
Dawn reveals while night discretizes
Lies beyond truth but error for one who disobeys?
After truth, what remains but misguidance for the disobedient
صارhas become مبداbeginning أمورناour affairs منتهاهاtheir end
صار مبدا أمورنا منتهاها
وانطلاقand freedom الطيورthe birds فيin الأقفاصthe cages
وانطلاق الطيور في الأقفاص
The beginning of our affairs has become their end,
The beginnings of our matters became their ends
And the birds' freedom is within the cages.
And the birds' release in cages
صدفshell الدرthe pearl يجعلmakes الدرthe pearl درّاًa pearl
صدف الدر يجعل الدر درّاً
ويسمىand is named الوجودexistence بالأشخاصthrough individuals
ويسمى الوجود بالأشخاص
The pearl's shell makes the pearl a pearl,
The gems make gems precious
And existence is named through individuals.
And existence is named for individuals
