لا أنت أنت ولا ذا

لا أنت أنت ولا ذا

Interpret this dream of yours:

This first sleep of yours

You are not yourself, nor is this itself.

You are not you, nor that one

وإنما الكل حق

وإنما الكل حق

في صورة تتحاذى

في صورة تتحاذى

And all is nothing but the Real,

Rather, all is truth

in a form that corresponds.

In a form that contends

وتلك أفعال ربي

وتلك أفعال ربي

تأتي وتمضي جذاذا

تأتي وتمضي جذاذا

And those are my Lord’s acts,

And those are the acts of my Lord

coming and passing in fragments.

That come and go swiftly

والناس قال نيام

والناس قال نيام

نبينا الأستاذا

نبينا الأستاذا

And “people are asleep,” said

And people said, sleep

our Prophet, the master.

Our Prophet the mentor

فخذ بما قال واحكم

فخذ بما قال واحكم

فلست تلقى نفاذا

فلست تلقى نفاذا

So hold to what he said and judge;

So take what he said and judge wisely

for you will find no way through.

For you will not find escape

وكل شيءٍ تراه

وكل شيءٍ تراه

اطلب له استنقاذا

اطلب له استنقاذا

And everything you see—

And everything you see

seek deliverance for it

Seek its deliverance

من لبسه فهو حق

من لبسه فهو حق

أرضاك أو ذاك آذى

أرضاك أو ذاك آذى

from its obscurity, for it is the Real,

From its disguise, be it truth

whether it pleased you or caused you harm.

Pleasing you or harming you

إن ذقت شيئاً أليماً

إن ذقت شيئاً أليماً

أو ذقت فيه لذاذا

أو ذقت فيه لذاذا

If you tasted something painful,

If you taste something painful

or tasted pleasure in it,

Or if you taste in it pleasure

فالكل فانٍ ولكن

فالكل فانٍ ولكن

أما الإله فهذا

أما الإله فهذا

then all is passing away; yet

All is ephemeral, except

as for God, this is He.

God, He is eternal

وما السوى غير شيء

وما السوى غير شيء

ملاعب لك هاذى

ملاعب لك هاذى

And all else is nothing but a thing

And naught besides is aught

toying with you in idle banter.

But playthings misleading you
