إن هذا الأحد الديمومُ

إن هذا الأحد الديمومُ

وهو بسم الله لي محزومُ

وهو بسم الله لي محزومُ

Indeed, this One is everlasting,

This eternal Sunday

and He is bound up for me in 'In the name of God.'

Is begun with "In the name of God" steadfastly

هكذا الله وجودٌ واحدٌ

هكذا الله وجودٌ واحدٌ

خالص محض ولا مفهوم

خالص محض ولا مفهوم

Thus God is one existence,

Thus God is one existence

pure, unalloyed, and uncomprehended.

Pure absolute, beyond conception

وجميع الخلق أفعال له

وجميع الخلق أفعال له

وهي شيء كله معدوم

وهي شيء كله معدوم

And all creation consists of His acts,

All creation are His acts

and they are something wholly nonexistent.

And it is a thing totally nonexistent

واعرفوه كل شيء هالكٌ

واعرفوه كل شيء هالكٌ

جاء إلا وجهه المعلوم

جاء إلا وجهه المعلوم

And know Him: everything is perishing,

And know that everything perishes

as it is stated, except His known Face.

Except His known face that came

وهو في أفعاله أجمعها

وهو في أفعاله أجمعها

ظاهرٌ حيٌّ هو القيوم

ظاهرٌ حيٌّ هو القيوم

And He, in all His acts,

And in all His acts He is

is manifest and living; He is the Self-Subsisting Sustainer.

Manifest, living, the eternal

فافهموا يا قوم ما قلت لكم

فافهموا يا قوم ما قلت لكم

فسوى قولي هو الموهوم

فسوى قولي هو الموهوم

So understand, O people, what I have said to you,

So understand O people what I told you

for anything other than my words is illusory.

Beyond my words is the fancied

والوجود الحق أنتم كلكم

والوجود الحق أنتم كلكم

وهو أمرٌ عندنا مكتوم

وهو أمرٌ عندنا مكتوم

And true existence is you, all of you,

The true existence is you all

and this is a matter kept secret among us.

And it is to us a hidden matter

وهو موقوف على ذوق الفنا

وهو موقوف على ذوق الفنا

فيه فافنوا وعليه دوموا

فيه فافنوا وعليه دوموا

And it depends on tasting annihilation

It depends on the taste of annihilation

in Him; so efface yourselves, and persist in it.

So annihilate yourselves and persist in Him

واخرجوا لله عن أفعاله

واخرجوا لله عن أفعاله

وهي أنتم وإليه قوموا

وهي أنتم وإليه قوموا

And, for God's sake, leave His acts behind,

And exclude from God His acts

and they are you; and rise toward Him.

Which are you, and to Him move

وبه فاتحدوا لا تنظروا

وبه فاتحدوا لا تنظروا

لسواه فالسوى مذموم

لسواه فالسوى مذموم

And so become one with Him; do not look

And with Him unite, look not

at anything but Him, for otherness is blameworthy.

To other, for other is blameworthy

لمتى الشرك الخفيْ يبقى إلى

لمتى الشرك الخفيْ يبقى إلى

موتكم لا كان هذا الشوم

موتكم لا كان هذا الشوم

How long will hidden idolatry persist—until

How long will hidden polytheism remain

your death? May this ill fortune never be!

Until your death, this misfortune?

إنما الشرك ضلال كله

إنما الشرك ضلال كله

فاتركوه إنه مسموم

فاتركوه إنه مسموم

Idolatry is nothing but error, through and through;

Polytheism is but total misguidance

so abandon it, for it is poisoned.

So leave it, it is poisonous

جل رب معنا إذ نحن لا

جل رب معنا إذ نحن لا

نحن وهو الراحم المرحوم

نحن وهو الراحم المرحوم

Exalted is the Lord with us, when we are not

Exalted is the Lord with us, for we are not

ourselves; and He is the giver and receiver of mercy.

We, and He is the Merciful, the Compassionate

أهلُ تقوى أهل قل مغفرة

أهلُ تقوى أهل قل مغفرة

هو والقول لنا المرقوم

هو والقول لنا المرقوم

Worthy of reverence, fit—say—to forgive

People of piety, people of "Say, forgiveness"

is He; and the saying is written down for us.

He, and the word to us is brought

والذي أَوَّلَ هذا جاحدٌ

والذي أَوَّلَ هذا جاحدٌ

قول حق وهو المحروم

قول حق وهو المحروم

And whoever interprets this figuratively denies

And whoever interpreted this is an unbeliever

a word of truth, and he is deprived.

The word of truth, and he is deprived

عقله سوّل في الغي له

عقله سوّل في الغي له

ما له شمٌّ هو المزكوم

ما له شمٌّ هو المزكوم

His intellect has lured him into error;

His mind suggested to him in vain

he has no sense of smell; he is stricken with a cold.

What he has no scent of, he is censured

ولنا طوبى زهت والمنتهى

ولنا طوبى زهت والمنتهى

ولأرباب الحجى الزقوم

ولأرباب الحجى الزقوم

And ours are Tuba in bloom and the Utmost Boundary,

And for us is blessedness and the final end

and for the masters of reason, Zaqqum.

And for the lords of fantasies, Hellfire

شجرات هن في الذكر أتت

شجرات هن في الذكر أتت

ضاق عنها الحلق والحلقوم

ضاق عنها الحلق والحلقوم

They are trees mentioned in the Scripture;

They are trees in remembrance that came

the throat and windpipe were too narrow for them.

Too narrow for them are throat and gullet

فانيات كلها في أمرنا

فانيات كلها في أمرنا

أين منهم عجم والروم

أين منهم عجم والروم

All of them vanish in our affair;

All perishables in our matter

where among them are the Persians and Romans?

Where are Persians and Romans in it?

كلهم في أسر عقل ربطوا

كلهم في أسر عقل ربطوا

يا طيوراً حول ماءٍ حُوْموا

يا طيوراً حول ماءٍ حُوْموا

All of them are bound in the captivity of intellect.

All are captive to a binding mind

O birds, circle around water!

O birds gathered around stagnant water
