إنindeed المعشراتthe tenfold compositions أحرفthe letters الهجاthe alphabet
إن المعشرات أحرف الهجا
جاءتcame بأسرارwith the secrets of الإمامthe Imam المجتبيal-Mujtaba, the chosen one
جاءت بأسرار الإمام المجتبي
Indeed, the tenfold compositions are the letters of the alphabet;
The gatherings are letters of yearning
They came bearing the secrets of Imam al-Mujtaba.
They brought the secrets of the revered Imam
أقامتestablished الأولthe first فيin الآخرthe last إذsince
أقامت الأول في الآخر إذ
بظاهرthrough an outward aspect لباطنto an inward aspect فيهاwithin them الهدىguidance
بظاهر لباطن فيها الهدى
They established the first within the last, for
They established the first in the last as
Within them lies guidance, through the outward to the inward.
The apparent points to the esoteric therein is guidance
أهلthe people of العلومthe sciences يعرفونهاthey know them ولاand not
أهل العلوم يعرفونها ولا
ينكرهاdenies them إلاexcept الجهولthe utterly ignorant one ذوpossessed of الشقاwretchedness
ينكرها إلا الجهول ذو الشقا
Those versed in the sciences know them, and none
The people of knowledge recognize it, none
Denies them except the utterly ignorant, burdened with wretchedness.
Deny it except the ignorant, hapless folk
أهدتoffered as a gift إلىto المهديthe Mahdi ماwhat يصلحهbenefits him
أهدت إلى المهدي ما يصلحه
فيin ليلةa night منfrom المقاماتthe stations العلىthe exalted
في ليلة من المقامات العلى
They offered the Mahdi what would benefit him,
They present to the Mahdi what improves him
On a night, from the exalted stations:
In a night of the most sublime spiritual states
أسرارsecrets علمthe science of الحرفِthe letter عنfrom ذوقٍan experiential taste لهاof them
أسرار علم الحرفِ عن ذوقٍ لها
يتبعهfollows it التصريفthe directing of affairs فيwithin حكمthe decree of القضاfate
يتبعه التصريف في حكم القضا
Secrets of the science of letters, through a taste of them;
Secrets of the science of letters from a taste they possess
The directing of affairs follows it, under fate's decree,
Followed by interpretation according to the ruling of decree
إعانةan aid علىtoward ظهورthe manifestation of الأمرthe command فيamong
إعانة على ظهور الأمر في
أهلthe beings of الطبيعةnature بأرضon earth وسماand heaven
أهل الطبيعة بأرض وسما
As an aid to the command's manifestation among
Aid in the appearance of the matter among
The beings of nature, on earth and in heaven.
The naturalists on earth and in the sky
إذاwhen أرادhe wills الشيءthe thing قالhe says كنbe! لهto it
إذا أراد الشيء قال كن له
فإنهso indeed it يكونcomes to be يعنيthat is بالدعاthrough supplication
فإنه يكون يعني بالدعا
When he wills a thing, he says to it, “Be!”
When the thing is willed, He says "Be" to it
So it comes to be—that is, through supplication.
So it comes into being, meaning through supplication
أمرa matter عظيمmighty هوhe فيهin it ظاهرmanifest
أمر عظيم هو فيه ظاهر
بعشرthrough ten آياتverses لسورةof the surah النباal-Naba, the Tidings
بعشر آيات لسورة النبا
A mighty matter, in which he is manifest,
A magnificent matter it is, wherein the apparent
Through ten verses of Surah al-Naba.
Is in ten verses of the Chapter of the Tidings
أتىcame بهاwith them اللهGod لهfor him علامةa sign
أتى بها الله له علامة
فيamong قومهhis people وخصهand singled him out بالإعتناwith special care
في قومه وخصه بالإعتنا
God brought them as a sign for him
God brought it to him as a sign
Among his people, and singled him out for special care.
Among his people and singled him out with care
أقولI say هذاthis ومراديand my intent أنهthat he
أقول هذا ومرادي أنه
فيin كلevery عصرage إنwhether خفىhe is hidden وإنand whether بداhe appears
في كل عصر إن خفى وإن بدا
I say this, and I mean that he
I say this and my intention is that
Is in every age, whether hidden or manifest.
In every age, be it hidden or manifest
