Indeed, the claim to love has cast me into affliction,

As dictated by what passion approves and seeks.

His command tugs at my spirit, for it is his spirit,

And my self draws it toward him, so it rises.

So, O my ever-commanding self, take it slowly here:

How long will strife in life endure?

And its end is the lover's death; if he dies,

Then that one is beloved, with knowledge in his keeping.

The horizon's stars gleam in our water; and if

The water perishes, it disappears from sight, while the stars remain stars.

And they are not two things, O self; so understand

My words—for many minds were bewildered by that,

And went astray through their claim, which is the water of them both,

As we have said; and the fool is blameworthy.
