    ووجودي فيكمو عدمُ

    Indeed, sickness has wasted me;

    and my being in you is nonbeing.

    أنتم المقصود لا العلَمُ

    So enduring being is yours, O my masters;

    you are the goal, not the landmark.

    And the dear folk of the encampment have come to know.

    Would that my tears, when sent forth,

    were brought into nearness by remembrance of you.

    And ardent longing has wasted my heart.

    How can I hide it, when passion has

    two witnesses: tears and sickness?

    Through God, I have ever dwelt in lofty aspirations,

    whether I was in being or nonbeing.

    So how long this need for pain,

    O my dear companions at Dhu Salam?

    Who are my dear companions, and what is Salam?

    My little soul vanished without delay,

    like lightning that flashed in a ruined dwelling.

    O my intimate friends, no reproach:

    فاذكروني إن نسيتكمُ

    today I am too absorbed to heed myself;

    so remember me if I forget you.

    وحبيبي غير مستترِ

    My cloudedness has come to equal clarity;

    and my beloved is not concealed.

    وأشيعوا في الحمى خبري

    So behold my trace, O my masters,

    and spread news of me within the sanctuary;

    and reveal the secret, and remain hidden.

    I have cast myself down at the thresholds,

    and belong to the beloved ones.

    And whenever I am rightly guided,

    love does not see me turn back

    after the tents have appeared to me.

    نوره حق لمفتهمِ

    The realm of this world is night-dark gloom;

    its light is truth to one who understands.

    How much being is mine, and how much nonbeing!

    Before today I was in a dream,

    ما لأشواقي لكم سببُ

    and that dream has come to an end.

    My yearnings for you have no cause;

    ساكن حالي ومضطربُ

    for humankind is far away and drawing near.

    My state is still and agitated;

    دونه الأوتار والنغمُ

    so all my time is rapture;

    strings and melodies fall short of it.

    وبدا في نور نشأتهِ

    My spirit split the cloud of its body,

    and appeared in the light of its origin;

    and my being vanished in its darkness.

    And my beloved is the one to whose splendor

    my yearnings and I appeal for judgment.

    O joy of my heart, and O my rapture!

    And my nonbeing is no wonder.

    My light shone forth, and my veils vanished.

    وإذا قطَّبتُ يبتسمُ

    Whenever I turn away, he brings me forward;

    and when I frown, he smiles.
