Indeed, my words are supported by transmitted texts,

and by what all intellects demand,

for whoever knows my terminology and understands

the explanation of my state in the acceptable sense I intend.

I am not among those who say of everything

that it is God—the saying of every ignoramus,

whose aim is to ward religious obligations off himself,

taking liberties with the rulings of the Messenger's Law.

    بل أنا العبد طالب للقبول

    Indeed, I disavow him at every moment;

rather, I am the servant, seeking acceptance.

And when I say that, my meaning is

the maker of the thing, the doer of what is done.

For no thing is fixed, in my view,

but like lightning flashing amid the ruins.

And He from whom that thing appears

is Lord of the branches, Lord of the roots.

Like the Friend's words at the moment of self-disclosure:

'Indeed, this is my Lord'—truly spoken.

    ثم كان امتيازه بالأفول

    And it was a star that appeared, a full moon, and a sun;

then its distinction became clear through setting.

The ignorant took the sayings of one like me,

then used them to speak about the unknown.

    لا ولم يعرفوا حقيق النزول

    They did not taste in them what we tasted;

no, nor did they know the reality of descent.

    They merely imitated, memorizing words

and laying claim to them without attainment.

And their utmost understanding is imagination,

and for them this is the utmost they can hope for.

They are common folk who do not know; and this

is a secret that baffled all the masters.

The masters tried to comprehend it,

but it refused from behind its drawn veil.

So they effaced their selves and came to Him,

in poverty, with bounty freely offered.

And they strove toward Him through Him, and upheld

His rule, leaving aside the reproacher's words.

So He disclosed Himself to them and annihilated their desire,

then annihilated their gaunt bodily forms.

The millstone from Him ground them as it turned,

then bore them along as torrents rush.

And this befell them again and again, until

they fell into the encounter and a terrifying affair.

Thus they are the act proceeding from Him in every state,

and they are absent, as a ghoul is absent.

In Him they have a name, but no outward form,

through confirmed direct vision and attainment.

And upon them the signs of truth shone forth,

hidden from none but the forsaken.

These are sound eyes directed toward Him,

disdaining the cross-eyed gazes turned away from Him.

How far from these is the discourse of those who profess union,

with claims of annihilation, and of those who profess indwelling!

Understand this: whoever abandons the Law is blind

to the path of guidance and the attainment of what is sought.

For if he is a believer, he is a transgressor; or,

if a denier, he is an unbeliever, given to meddling.

How can he ascend unless he repents of his missteps,

making firm the twist of his loosened rope?

That is far, far off; it cannot be, even if

    blades have fallen upon blades.

How far is understanding wine and drinking it

    in thought from tasting wine!
