O critic, for I am not your equal

How could I assail a beauty who is to me

How can I describe she who is beautiful?

what spirits are to bodies?

She is a soul among bodies

إن كلي قد شف عنها جهاراً

إن كلي قد شف عنها جهاراً

فاعرفوها في أرجلي والأيادي

فاعرفوها في أرجلي والأيادي

Indeed, my whole being has become transparent, revealing her openly;

I have made clear my passion for her

so recognize her in my feet and hands.

So recognize her in my feet and hands

أبغضتها مني العدا بعيون

أبغضتها مني العدا بعيون

هي ما بين جفنهم والسواد

هي ما بين جفنهم والسواد

The enemies hated her in me, with eyes

The enemies have made me hate her

that lie between their eyelids and the pupils' blackness.

She who is between their eyelids and pupils

قذفتهم عنها بوهم حلولٍ

قذفتهم عنها بوهم حلولٍ

صوَّروه بهم ووهم اتحاد

صوَّروه بهم ووهم اتحاد

She cast them away from herself through a delusion of indwelling,

They have cast aspersions on her

which they imagined in themselves, and a delusion of union.

Imagining and fantasizing union with her

وأشاعوه في اعتقاد رجال

وأشاعوه في اعتقاد رجال

ربهم عندهم لبالمرصاد

ربهم عندهم لبالمرصاد

And they spread it through the beliefs of men;

And spread it as the belief of men

their Lord is with them, surely lying in wait.

Whose Lord lies in wait for them

وإذا تاهت العقول فهل من

وإذا تاهت العقول فهل من

مرشد غير خالق الإرشاد

مرشد غير خالق الإرشاد

And when minds lose their way, is there any

And when minds go astray, is there

guide other than the Creator of guidance?

Any guide other than the Creator of guidance?

لي بنجد سقى الحيا أرض نجد

لي بنجد سقى الحيا أرض نجد

فرط عشق ما إن له من نفاد

فرط عشق ما إن له من نفاد

In Najd I have—may rain water Najd's soil—

I have a passion in Najd that has watered the living earth of Najd

an excess of love that knows no end,

An undying love that knows no limits

وغرام وصبوة بجياد

وغرام وصبوة بجياد

يا رعى الله عهدنا بجياد

يا رعى الله عهدنا بجياد

and ardent love and longing in Jiyad.

And an infatuation with its steeds

Ah, may God preserve our bond in Jiyad!

O Lord protect our covenant with the steeds

نزل الركب عن يمين المصلَّى

نزل الركب عن يمين المصلَّى

وأراهم قد خيموا بفؤادي

وأراهم قد خيموا بفؤادي

The caravan alighted to the right of the prayer ground,

The caravan descended to the right of the praying place

and I see they have pitched their tents in my heart.

And I saw them camped in my heart

وأنا الذنب عند من هو كلي

وأنا الذنب عند من هو كلي

ارتجى توبة من الإيجاد

ارتجى توبة من الإيجاد

And I am the sin before Him who is my all;

And I am the sinner in the eyes of the One

I hope to repent of being brought into existence.

Who is all mine, hoping for repentance from Him

ملت عني به إليه لأني

ملت عني به إليه لأني

دائماً منه طوع كل مراد

دائماً منه طوع كل مراد

I turned away from myself, through Him, toward Him, for I

I turned away from Him to Him because

am always, through Him, obedient to all that is willed.

I always obey His every wish

ثم بي مال عنه لي وهو طوعي

ثم بي مال عنه لي وهو طوعي

فرأيت الأشفاع في الأفراد

فرأيت الأشفاع في الأفراد

Then, through me, He turned from Himself toward me, and He was at my bidding,

Then He turned to me while I obeyed Him

so I saw pairs within single ones.

And so I saw the intercessions among individuals

وأتاني الخطاب من طور نفسي

وأتاني الخطاب من طور نفسي

عند ما دك من تجلي الجواد

عند ما دك من تجلي الجواد

And the call came to me from the mountain of my soul,

And a discourse came to me from my own soul

when it was leveled by the Bountiful One's self-revelation.

At the time when the Bountiful pounded me with revelations

وسرى سرُّ كل شي بسري

وسرى سرُّ كل شي بسري

وبدا النور من يمين الوادي

وبدا النور من يمين الوادي

And the secret of everything coursed through my secret,

And a secret crept into my own secret

and the light appeared from the right side of the valley.

And light shone from the right valley

خضت بحر الحياة والكل موتى

خضت بحر الحياة والكل موتى

وشربت الوجود والكل صادي

وشربت الوجود والكل صادي

I plunged into the sea of life, while all were dead,

I plunged into the sea of life while all others are dead

and I drank existence, while all were thirsty.

And I drank existence while all others are repelled

وصعدت العلا وخلَّفتُ جسمي

وصعدت العلا وخلَّفتُ جسمي

في يدي أصدقائه والأعادي

في يدي أصدقائه والأعادي

And I ascended the heights and left my body behind

And I ascended to the Most High, leaving my body

in the hands of its friends and enemies.

In the hands of both my friends and enemies

منه قوم ذاقوا اللذيذ وقوم

منه قوم ذاقوا اللذيذ وقوم

مضغوا السم منه في الأكباد

مضغوا السم منه في الأكباد

From it, some people tasted what was delicious, while others

Among them are those who tasted the sweetness

chewed poison from it within their livers.

And those who chewed the poison in their livers

عظمت منَّةُ الإله علينا

عظمت منَّةُ الإله علينا

كل حينٍ من دون كل العباد

كل حينٍ من دون كل العباد

Immense is God's favor upon us

Transcendent is the blessing of God upon us

at every moment, to the exclusion of all other servants.

Above all creatures, at all times

وإذا أنعم الكريم فماذا

وإذا أنعم الكريم فماذا

أنتجته عداوة الحساد

أنتجته عداوة الحساد

And when the Generous One bestows favors, what then

And when the Generous One grants a blessing

has the enmity of the envious produced?

What does the enmity of enviers produce?
