Indeed, listening—listening to the reed flute and the string—

Waters the lands of people's souls like rain.

So if foulness lies within the souls, it makes it sprout,

And it bears a kind of fruit in wretchedness.

And if goodness lies within the souls, its fragrance wafts

Among humankind: the scent of fragrant ambergris.

So with your reason uncover the state you are in, and be

Wary of confusion in the affairs of the soul.

And whoever declares it forbidden has as his aim

To warn the good-hearted, for remembrance and reflection.

And whoever declares it lawful is engaged in

Guiding the foul-hearted away from deeply entrenched sparks.

    And the aim of all in Islam is benefit;

Far be it from them to intend any harm for people.

And do not, in your ignorance, think ill of anyone among humankind who

Has attained perfection, while you fell short of him.

Weigh your own self in the balance, admitting

Your ignorance of all those you do not know among humankind.

For God has, within the folds of existence, throughout

The passage of time, some pure innate natures.
