    Indeed, annihilation is man's purification

for the prayer of knowing the One far yet near.

For the prayer of knowing God, without

the purity of annihilation, lacks its pillars.

And unbelief is manifest in it through his speech

and through his action and the removal of faith.

Indeed, annihilation is a purification prescribed

for the prayer of knowing, incumbent upon man.

And it is pure annihilation, through purification from

the filth of bodies, the gross forms of living creatures,

and from souls, the subtle forms of the cosmos, which

came into being; call this a ritual impurity born of createdness.

And purification from physical and ritual impurities does not

    suffice without water that flows.

And the water is the water of the unseen, descending from the heaven

of God's unseen realm upon an afflicted heart.

    That must be unqualified water,

free of whatever created things mingle with it,

so that through it ritual impurity vanishes. And if it is

water you see qualified by meanings,

then it is qualified and does not remove

ritual impurity, as those versed in the matter have said.

But regarding its removal of physical filth, they have

two opinions; and removal calls for clarification.

And the water is that unqualified, unmixed water which

is meant as existence in the Qur'an:

the realization of every reality through the Real, for

He alone is, and everything is perishing.
