وان أنوار حبيبي
In the darkness of the worlds arose
I went out into the darkness of the night
the lights of my beloved.
And the lights of my beloved appeared
فاهتدىso found the way الساريthe night traveler إلىto ذاthat (first fragment of ذاك)
فاهتدى الساري إلى ذا
كthat (final fragment of ذاك) الحمىthe sanctuary الناءيdistant القريبnear
ك الحمى الناءي القريب
So the night traveler found his way to that
So the one wandering was guided to that
sanctuary, distant yet near.
Fever which was calling out from nearby
وشممناand we smelled عرفthe fragrance of مسكmusk
وشممنا عرف مسك
منfrom رباthe heights of نجدNajd وطيبand perfume
من ربا نجد وطيب
And we breathed the fragrance of musk
And we smelled the fragrance of musk
from the heights of Najd, and perfume.
From the land of Najd and perfume
وصبتand yearned نفسthe soul of عذوليmy reproacher
وصبت نفس عذولي
وانمحتand was effaced عينthe eye of رقيبيmy watcher
وانمحت عين رقيبي
And my reproacher’s soul yearned,
And I poured out my loving soul
and my watcher’s eye was blotted out.
And the eye of my watcher closed
ياO مليحlovely الوجهof face خلصrescue
يا مليح الوجه خلص
نيme منfrom الهجرestrangement القبيحugly
ني من الهجر القبيح
O lovely-faced one, rescue
O beautiful of face, save
me from ugly estrangement.
Me from the ugly estrangement
ثمthen حولturn; transform ليfor me إشاراallusions (first fragment of إشارات)
ثم حول لي إشارا

So in this world I am a stranger

to that wondrous beauty.

Send blessings, O Lord, upon him who guides
