If you say that existence is the very

existent, O Ashʿarī, then tell me:

likewise, that the existent is the very

    existence—the converse, without flaw.

And you say that existence is a genus,

and a genus is distinguished by a differentia,

and the differentia is also existence itself,

then all is a genus, like for like.

Where, then, is existence's differentia, O you,

according to your most exalted knowledge?

If you say its differentia is a conceptual consideration

in the mind, like the conception of a shadow,

we say to you: that conception is a thing

with an established presence in every mind.

And it is called a thing, and it is the

existent; so return to the ruling on all.

And if you say that every thing

has existence with an independent status,

distinct in essence from all else,

so no commonality has been posited in it,

we say: it is no genus; so the existence

    intended is particular, not universal,

contrary to what they formulated and said

in the ruling of the canon of the science of form.

Or if you say that existence is other than the

existent, and the other is no foundation

at all—upon the thing, while it is no

thing, it became an attribute making it manifest—

in what do you see the attribute subsisting, while the

thing described is nothing? Then listen to me.

    And can attributes ever subsist

without things and without a locus?

This is a question addressed to minds,

    bringing knowledge and dispelling ignorance.

So if you are learned, examine closely

its aspects, O most esteemed friend.
