I am the flashing lightning, and so are you.

But you have not witnessed a flash.

How long will you remain in blindness? For I

see the heights, while you see the depths.

And say: this is the difference between you and me—

my state has always been the opposite of yours.

So you deny me, ignorant of me, measuring me

against yourself; thus you remain hateful to me.

Be gentle, O you who are veiled from what

flows abundantly to you from your Lord.

The springs of knowledge within you have receded,

and you took no heed, while the water of guidance was drained away.

Contemplate your inward self as it changes

with each breath; you will grasp what has been poured forth.

And be with the command, not with creation; you will know

the command in its length and breadth for you.

And examine your outward self in its solidity:

you will find it flowing through you, within you too.

You treat your perishable body so it may endure,

and leave your enduring heart ill.

    ولو حققتهن لَكُنَّ بيضا

    To you, the worlds are black with otherness;

yet if you discerned their reality, they would be white.

So if you truly turned away from your worldly life,

and your heart were disciplined through sincerity,

you would find the command—God's command—nearer

to you, and you would be clarified butter, not buttermilk.
