له الغربُ من أوج العلى ولنا الشرقُ

له الغربُ من أوج العلى ولنا الشرقُ

وما بيننا في مقتضى ذاتنا فرقُ

وما بيننا في مقتضى ذاتنا فرقُ

His is the West from the zenith of exaltation, and ours the East.

The West has the heights of glory, and we have the East

And there is no difference between us in what our essence entails.

Yet between us there is no difference in our essence

وهل باسم محي الدين يمتاز في الورى

وهل باسم محي الدين يمتاز في الورى

وعبد الغنيْ إلا من الشجر العرق

وعبد الغنيْ إلا من الشجر العرق

And does Muhyi al-Din stand apart by name among humankind,

Does the name Mehdi distinguished in the world

and Abd al-Ghani, save as the root stands apart from the tree?

Differ from Abdul Ghani except in lineage?

كلانا وجود واحد وهو ذاتُ من

كلانا وجود واحد وهو ذاتُ من

لها أنني برق كما أنه برق

لها أنني برق كما أنه برق

Both of us are one existence, and it is the essence of the one

We both are one existence, an essence of One

for whom I am a lightning flash, just as he is a lightning flash.

To whom I am a lightning bolt, as He is a lightning bolt

وما النور إلا النار في نظر السوى

وما النور إلا النار في نظر السوى

وللنار إطفاء به ولها حرق

وللنار إطفاء به ولها حرق

And light is nothing but fire in the vision of otherness.

And light is but fire in the eyes of the equitable

And fire can be quenched by it, and fire can also burn.

Fire can be extinguished by it, or cause burning

هي الشمس من خلف الجدار تطلعت

هي الشمس من خلف الجدار تطلعت

إذا سد خرق منه أظهرها خرق

إذا سد خرق منه أظهرها خرق

She is the sun, peering out from behind the wall.

It is the sun behind a wall that rose

Whenever a gap in it is sealed, another gap reveals her.

If a breach in it reveals it, a breach obscures it

طرقت بها ما خصني من شئونها

طرقت بها ما خصني من شئونها

كما كان من تلك الشئون له طرق

كما كان من تلك الشئون له طرق

Through her I approached what was allotted to me of her affairs,

I knocked on it with what concerns me of its affairs

just as he had an approach arising from those affairs.

As those affairs had their own ways to it

على سره منه الرضى وهو سرنا

على سره منه الرضى وهو سرنا

فمنا علينا ذاك ما غنت الوُرْق

فمنا علينا ذاك ما غنت الوُرْق

May good pleasure from him rest upon his secret, and it is our secret;

He is pleased with its secret, which is our secret

so that is from us, upon us, as long as the gray doves sing.

So He has granted us from it what the leaves sing
