علىin المحبةlove منthe one whom أهواهI love him ألفانيhe found me
على المحبة من أهواه ألفاني
وماand not طردْنيhe drove me away وللأعتابand to the thresholds ألفانيhe found me
وما طردْني وللأعتاب ألفاني
He whom I love found me in love.
The one I loved accustomed me to love
He did not drive me away, and found me at the thresholds.
Though he spurned me not, to his door I came
ياO قلبheart لاnot ألفa thousand بلrather أنthat (apparently 'if' here) كانthere are ألفانِtwo thousand
يا قلب لا ألف بل أن كان ألفانِ
فاقنعso be content بباقيwith what endures ولاand do not تنظرlook إلىtoward الفانيwhat passes away
فاقنع بباقي ولا تنظر إلى الفاني
O heart—not a thousand, but if there are two thousand—
O heart, grow not accustomed, but if you do
Be content with what endures, and do not look to what passes away.
Be content with what remains, gaze not on what is fleeting
