عرفhe knew المحبوبthe beloved فابتهجاand so he rejoiced
عرف المحبوب فابتهجا
ومنand from الأكوانthe created worlds قدhad خرجاhe departed
ومن الأكوان قد خرجا
He knew the beloved, and so rejoiced.
The beloved was recognized, so they rejoiced,
And from the created worlds he had departed.
And from the universes they emerged,
مستهامlove-stricken ليسnot يقنعهsatisfies him
مستهام ليس يقنعه
غيرother than لحظa glance العينthe eye نهبprey رجاhope
غير لحظ العين نهب رجا
Love-stricken, nothing satisfies him
Inspired, nothing satisfies him,
But a glance of the eye—he is prey to hope.
Except gazing upon the eyes plundering hope,
ضاقhe was hemmed in حتىeven لوif تكونwere لهfor him
ضاق حتى لو تكون له
وسعةthe vastness الدارينthe two abodes ماnot انفرجاhe found relief
وسعة الدارين ما انفرجا
He was so hemmed in that, even if he possessed
So narrow, as if it could be for him,
The vastness of both abodes, he would find no relief.
The vastness of the two abodes would not be relieved,
والنوىand separation والشوقand longing أتلفهdestroyed him
والنوى والشوق أتلفه
لمdid not يزلcease فيin الحبlove منزعجاrestless
لم يزل في الحب منزعجا
And separation and longing destroyed him;
And the determination and longing destroyed him,
He never ceased to be restless in love.
He did not cease to be troubled in love,
لوif لمنfor the one whom يهواهhe loves him كانhe had درىknown
لو لمن يهواه كان درى
منزلاًan abode منout of شوقهhis longing عرجاhe would ascend
منزلاً من شوقه عرجا
Had he known, for the one he loves,
If he who loves him only knew,
An abode, he would have ascended to it out of his longing.
A place from his longing leaned,
آهah منwho ليfor me لمdid not أجدI find أحداanyone
آه من لي لم أجد أحدا
عنهof him بالإدراكwith understanding ليto me لهجاspeaking fervently
عنه بالإدراك لي لهجا
Ah, who is there for me? I have found no one
Oh how I wish I could find someone,
Who spoke fervently to me of him with understanding.
Who could eloquently speak about him,
ليتwould that لوif ألقىI might find لهto him سبباa means
ليت لو ألقى له سببا
أوor أرىI see ليfor me نحوهtoward him درجاsteps
أو أرى لي نحوه درجا
Would that I could find a means to him,
I wish I could find a way for him,
Or see steps for me leading toward him.
Or see a path leading to him,
ذابmelted صبريmy patience وانقضىand ended جلديmy fortitude
ذاب صبري وانقضى جلدي
والتوانيand delay أحرقscorched المهجاthe souls
والتواني أحرق المهجا
My patience melted, and my fortitude ended;
My patience melted and my skin peeled off,
And delay scorched the souls.
And procrastination burned my insides,
رامhe sought بالأكوانwith the created worlds يشغلنيto distract me
رام بالأكوان يشغلني
عنهfrom him كيso that أسلوI might forget فشوقيthen my longing جاcame
عنه كي أسلو فشوقي جا
He sought to distract me with the created worlds
He wanted the universes to distract me,
From him, so I might forget; then came my longing.
From him so I can comfort my longing,
بيof me عليمfully aware غيرbut أنthat لهhe has
بي عليم غير أن له
حكمةa wisdom تهزَىscoffs بكلat every حجاintellect
حكمة تهزَى بكل حجا
He knows me well, yet he has
He is All-Knowing, though His wisdom,
A wisdom that scoffs at every intellect.
Mocks every argument.
