اجتمعوا يا إخوتي واحشدوا

فإن لي مسألةً تُجهدُ

فإن لي مسألةً تُجهدُ

Gather, my brothers, and assemble.

For I have a taxing question.

كنت أنا واليوم من مدة

كنت أنا واليوم من مدة

لست أنا ذاك الذي أعهد

لست أنا ذاك الذي أعهد

I once was I; and now, for some time,

I have not been the one I used to know.

ذاك مضى عني وهذا أتى

ذاك مضى عني وهذا أتى

وفيهما إني أنا المفرد

وفيهما إني أنا المفرد

That one left me, and this one came;

and in both, I am indeed the single one.

وتارة حيث التجلي اقتضى

وتارة حيث التجلي اقتضى

أذم هذاك وذا أحمد

أذم هذاك وذا أحمد

And sometimes, as self-disclosure requires,

I blame that one and praise this.

أنا الذي أعهد وهم وقد

أنا الذي أعهد وهم وقد

زال وجاء الحق لا يجحد

زال وجاء الحق لا يجحد

The 'I' I know is an illusion, and has

vanished; the Real has come, not to be denied.

أم ذاك مشهود الذي جاءني

أم ذاك مشهود الذي جاءني

فإنه كيف يشا يشهد

فإنه كيف يشا يشهد

Or is that One who came to me witnessed,

for He is witnessed however He wills?

أم تلك أيدي الكائنات التي

أم تلك أيدي الكائنات التي

من فوقها لله طالت يد

من فوقها لله طالت يد

Or are those the hands of created beings,

above which God's hand has stretched?

أم سيئات النفس قد بدلت

أم سيئات النفس قد بدلت

لي حسنات واهتدى المفسد

لي حسنات واهتدى المفسد

Or have the soul's evil deeds been changed

for me into good deeds, and the corrupter found guidance?

أم أسلم الشيطان إرث الذي

أم أسلم الشيطان إرث الذي

عن النبي المصطفى يستند

عن النبي المصطفى يستند

Or has Satan embraced Islam—an inheritance of what

rests on the authority of the chosen Prophet?

حقيقة حققها ناطق

حقيقة حققها ناطق

مجازها قد صار لا يقصد

مجازها قد صار لا يقصد

A literal truth confirmed by a speaker;

its figurative sense is now no longer intended.

أم هو ذاك الغيب من أصله

أم هو ذاك الغيب من أصله

شهادة جاءت له ترشد

شهادة جاءت له ترشد

Or is it that unseen reality, from whose source

a manifestation has come to point to Him?

والعلم قسمان فمستحضر

والعلم قسمان فمستحضر

ذكر ومحفوظ له يمدد

ذكر ومحفوظ له يمدد

And knowledge has two parts: what is brought to mind

is remembrance, and what is stored replenishes it.

والكل من حفظ قديم إلى

والكل من حفظ قديم إلى

ذكر هو المحدث لا ينفد

ذكر هو المحدث لا ينفد

And all passes from ancient preservation to

remembrance, newly formed and never exhausted.

وجود حق بشؤون له

وجود حق بشؤون له

مفروضه أبيض أو أسود

مفروضه أبيض أو أسود

Existence is real, with modes of its own;

its posited form is white or black.

وكلها فانية عنده

وكلها فانية عنده

وهي به لا معه توجد

وهي به لا معه توجد

And all of them pass away in His presence,

and they exist through Him, not alongside Him.

خلوا معاني الذوق لي أو دعوا

خلوا معاني الذوق لي أو دعوا

دعواكمُ العلم ولا تعتدوا

دعواكمُ العلم ولا تعتدوا

Leave the meanings of spiritual tasting to me, or abandon

your claim to knowledge, and do not overstep.

وحققوا أنفسكم وأدركوا

وحققوا أنفسكم وأدركوا

بالكشف ما جاء به المرشد

بالكشف ما جاء به المرشد

And realize your own selves, and perceive

through unveiling what the guide has brought.

وميزوا ما قاله عارف

وميزوا ما قاله عارف

من الذي يذكره الملحد

من الذي يذكره الملحد

And distinguish what a spiritual knower has said

from what the heretic mentions.

وكحل في أعين خلقة

وكحل في أعين خلقة

ليس كعين كحلها الإثمد

ليس كعين كحلها الإثمد

And naturally kohl-darkened eyes

are not like an eye whose kohl is antimony.

وليس من يملك شيئاً به

وليس من يملك شيئاً به

كمستعير للسوى يردد

كمستعير للسوى يردد

Nor is one who possesses something through Him

like a borrower from others who repeats.
