    Come, tell of those who went far away;

    in loving them, no desire of mine was fulfilled.

    في فؤادي العيون والطرر

    And explain my state, and recount what was wrought

    in my heart by the eyes and forelocks.

    فاتت العين لم يفت أثر

    And relate news of the one I love; for if

    their presence is lost, a trace is not.

    do not blame them, for they are cattle.

    from blaming me, nor do they have insight.

    ever more, as though he were a stone:

    his speech is idle talk, not to be heeded.

    She who has a face shines forth, concealed

    behind a veil made wholly of forms.

    Reason is too dense for her subtlety;

    and thus thoughts are bewildered by her.
