من وجودٍ منزه عن قيودِهْ

Behold the cosmos, issuing from His Being,

Look at the cosmos emerging from His Being,

from a Being transcending all its bounds—

From a Being exalted beyond its confines.

عدم من وجوده هو باد

عدم من وجوده هو باد

أنت منه ممتع بشهوده

أنت منه ممتع بشهوده

a nonbeing that, from His Being, appears;

It is nothingness, manifest through His Being;

from Him you are delighted through beholding Him.

You are granted by Him the delight of beholding Him.

عن تفاصيل حادث وحدوده

The Presence of Knowledge, through the Word, disclosed

The presence of knowledge has disclosed through speech

the particulars of the originated realm and its bounds.

The particulars of a created being and its limits.

فهو حق في علمه كل شيء

فهو حق في علمه كل شيء

ظاهر بالكلام عن مقصوده

ظاهر بالكلام عن مقصوده

For every thing is real within His knowledge,

For He is the Real; in His knowledge everything

manifest through the Word, concerning its intended object.

Is manifest through speech concerning His intent.

لا تقل غير ما أقول وإلا

لا تقل غير ما أقول وإلا

أنت عبد الخيال يا ابن جدوده

أنت عبد الخيال يا ابن جدوده

Say nothing other than what I say—or else

Say nothing other than what I say, or else

you are fancy’s slave, O son of its forefathers.

You are imagination’s slave, O son of your forefathers.

لا تكن عابداً خيالك وهماً

لا تكن عابداً خيالك وهماً

واعبد الله في حقيق وجوده

واعبد الله في حقيق وجوده

Do not be one who worships your fancy as a delusion;

Do not worship your imagination in delusion;

worship God in the reality of His Being.

And worship God in the truth of His Being.

هو حق وأنت والكون طراً

هو حق وأنت والكون طراً

باطل زاهق بحكم نفوده

باطل زاهق بحكم نفوده

He is the Real, while you and the cosmos, all,

He is the Real; you and the cosmos, altogether,

are falsehood, vanishing under His all-pervading efficacy.

Are vanishing falsehood, subject to extinction.

هذه وحدة الوجود فخذها

هذه وحدة الوجود فخذها

مثلنا عنه ذائقاً فيض جوده

مثلنا عنه ذائقاً فيض جوده

This is the Oneness of Being—receive it,

This is the oneness of Being, so receive it,

and, like us, taste from Him the outpouring of His bounty.

Like us, from Him, tasting the outpouring of His bounty.

ودع الملحدين بالجهل فيها

ودع الملحدين بالجهل فيها

مع معاداة غيهم وصدوده

مع معاداة غيهم وصدوده

Leave the heretics in their ignorance of it,

And leave the heretics in their ignorance concerning it,

along with the hostility and aversion of others.

While opposing their error and repelling it.

يحسبون الضلال في الله رشداً

يحسبون الضلال في الله رشداً

ويظنون أنهم من وفوده

ويظنون أنهم من وفوده

They reckon straying concerning God to be right guidance,

They reckon error concerning God to be right guidance,

and imagine themselves among His visiting delegations.

And suppose that they are among His visitors.

أنت لا تستطيع أنك تهدي

أنت لا تستطيع أنك تهدي

عبد رب قد ضل عن معبوده

عبد رب قد ضل عن معبوده

You have no power to guide

You have no power to guide

the Lord’s servant, once he has strayed from the One he worships.

A servant of a lord, gone astray from the one he worships.
