بطلعةat the sight of وجهa face نورهits light مشهرproclaiming الفتكdeadly violence
And a woman veiled from us, who forced me to lay myself bare for her,
At the sight of a face whose light proclaims its deadly power.
فقلتso I said ورياهاand her fragrance لناto us فاحwafted كالمسكlike musk
أياO ربةlady of الخدرthe secluded chamber التيwho أفسدتyou ruined نسكيmy devotions
So I said, as her fragrance wafted to us like musk:
“O lady of the secluded chamber, who has ruined my devotions,
علىin كلevery حالstate أنتyou لاno بدَّescape ليfor me منكِfrom you
نويتI intended الفناannihilation فيهاin her وللمرءand for a person ماwhat نوىhe intended
Whatever the case, I cannot do without you.”
I resolved on annihilation in her, and each person has what they intend.
فناديتهاthen I called to her رفقاًbe gentle إلىuntil كمhow long أرىI see نوىseparation
ولاand no بدescape منfrom وصلٍunion بهthrough it يسكنُis stilled الجوىlove’s anguish
Then I called to her: “Be gentle! How long must I endure separation?
And there must be union, through which love’s anguish is stilled,
فإماso either بذلٍّthrough abasement وهوand it is أليقُmore fitting بالهوىfor love
وإماor else بعزthrough might وهوand it is أليقmore fitting بالملكِfor sovereignty
So either through abasement, which better befits love,
Or else through might, which better befits sovereignty.”
