    If only, when I said 'I,'

    I possessed the spirit and encompassed the body.

    وأنا يا ليت شعري من أنا

    This is none but my beloved, present here;

    And I—would that I knew!—who am I?

    My human nature subsists through Him who brought it into being,

    Where my divine nature drew near to the Creator.

    O people of understanding, is there anyone

    To do me justice? The self is lost here.

    Am I human nature in its heaviness?

    Am I divine nature, where it lies hidden?

    Or am I an illusion? And when there appeared the—

    Truth, my falsehood fled and was ground to dust.

    ما لها عمن به قامت غنى

    Created things are nothing but accidents;

    They have no independence from Him through whom they subsist.

    Or they are the shadow; ask, then, about the figure

    Who always has a greater claim on us than we ourselves do.

    أندب الربع وأبكي الدمنا

    And today I do indeed subsist through Him;

    I lament the dwelling and weep over the campsite ruins.

    ويحهم كم يدَّعون الفطنا

    My people are veiled by the veil of the self;

    Alas for them—how much discernment they claim!

    Knowledge of outward forms deceived them; they were content

    With its husk, and thought it all they wished for.

    And if they do not know themselves,

    What, then, have they known here?

    فلظىً قد عبدوا لا ربَّنا

    They worship God for fear of blazing fire;

    So they have worshipped blazing fire, not our Lord.

    And for the abode of eternity they prayed, not for Him,

    Like people who worship an idol.

    I am enthralled by a beloved, by whom

    All who lived before me were enthralled.

    أنه في بيت قلبي سكنا

    He is neither in the west nor in the east;

    For He has dwelt in the house of my heart.

    Wherever I turn, I encounter His face,

    Manifest—a beautiful face! I would give my life for Him.

    And how often I have fasted and prayed to Him!

    Rather, through Him, until I effaced time.

    And how often I circumambulated the station of nearness!

    And whenever I was there, I indeed attained my desires.

    والبقا إن رمته سرُّ الفنا

    And if you wish to live through Him, then die;

    And abiding existence, if you seek it, is the secret of annihilation.
