The cloud of events veiled the rising light

of a sun—full in essence, yet empty.

غنمت به قوم عليه نفوسهم

غنمت به قوم عليه نفوسهم

قدسية بشراب وصل سائغ

قدسية بشراب وصل سائغ

Through him a people prospered; their souls, devoted to him,

were holy through a pleasant draught of union.

غرقوا بأمواج الوجود فأدركوا ال

أنواع من حكَمٍ هناك نوابغ

أنواع من حكَمٍ هناك نوابغ

They drowned in the waves of existence and perceived the—

varieties of wondrous wisdom there.

غنت حمامات اللوى عند الذي

غنت حمامات اللوى عند الذي

يلهو وناحت عند صب لائغ

يلهو وناحت عند صب لائغ

The doves of al-Liwā sang for the one

at play, but wailed for a stammering lover.

فشجت قلوب بلابلٍ ولغالغ

فشجت قلوب بلابلٍ ولغالغ

The secrets of the Unseen of all unseen descended,

and saddened the hearts of nightingales and storks.

غربت هنالك شمسه مذ عندنا

غربت هنالك شمسه مذ عندنا

طلعت بصبغ للكوائن صابغ

طلعت بصبغ للكوائن صابغ

His sun set there when, here among us,

it rose with a dye that colors all beings.

غنى الفقير به وعز ذليلنا

غنى الفقير به وعز ذليلنا

ولبست تاج الملك من يد صائغ

ولبست تاج الملك من يد صائغ

Through him the poor find wealth, and our lowly one finds honor;

and I donned the crown of kingship from a goldsmith's hand.

غفرانه يمحو ذنوب وجودنا

غفرانه يمحو ذنوب وجودنا

معه فتنزل بالمقام البالغ

معه فتنزل بالمقام البالغ

His forgiveness erases the sins of our existence

alongside him—so alight at the ultimate station.

غبنا وقد حضر الحبيب كائننا

إذ لم نكن ما القول قول مبالغ

إذ لم نكن ما القول قول مبالغ

We were absent, while the Beloved—our very being—was present,

when we were not: these are no exaggerator's words.

غم وهمٌّ للذي هو جاحد

غم وهمٌّ للذي هو جاحد

إذ سالك فينا مسالك زائغ

إذ سالك فينا مسالك زائغ

Sorrow and anguish for the one who denies,

for among us he treads the paths of one astray.
