حمائم شوق في الغصون تنوحُ

حمائم شوق في الغصون تنوحُ

تسر هواها تارة وتبوحُ

تسر هواها تارة وتبوحُ

Doves of longing lament among the boughs.

Doves of longing coo in the branches,

At times they conceal their love, at times reveal it.

Now pleased with their love, now confessing.

حجازية شامية تألف الغنا

حجازية شامية تألف الغنا

فتغدو به في غسها وتروح

فتغدو به في غسها وتروح

Of the Hijaz and al-Sham, they are fond of song.

Hijazi, Shami, they blend their songs

So they go forth with it in their [unclear setting] and return.

And with them at dawn depart and fly away.

حديث الهوى عني روته مسلسلاً

حديث الهوى عني روته مسلسلاً

وما هي إلا للمتيم روح

وما هي إلا للمتيم روح

They narrated the tale of love from me, link by link.

The tale of love she told me in detail,

And to the love-stricken, they are nothing but a soul.

Yet she is but the soul of the enamored.

حداه المطايا بالقلوب رويدكم

حداه المطايا بالقلوب رويدكم

إلى الحي سالت للقلوب جروح

إلى الحي سالت للقلوب جروح

O drivers of the mounts, be gentle with the hearts!

Restrain your mounts from trampling hearts!

The hearts’ wounds have streamed toward the encampment.

For wounds they left the hearts still gush.

حمى الغور لاحت بالعشي بروقه

حمى الغور لاحت بالعشي بروقه

ونشر الخزامَى بالنسيم يفوح

ونشر الخزامَى بالنسيم يفوح

Al-Ghawr’s sanctuary—its lightning gleamed at dusk.

The flames of the valley shone at dusk,

And lavender’s fragrance wafts on the breeze.

And the breeze spreads the perfume blossoms waft.

حويت علوماً بالتجلي نفيسة

حويت علوماً بالتجلي نفيسة

وطرفي إلى ما فوق ذاك طموح

وطرفي إلى ما فوق ذاك طموح

I gained precious knowledge through manifestation.

I gained sublime, precious knowledge,

And my gaze aspires to what lies above that.

And still to what's beyond, my eyes aspire.

حفيظة عهدي لا فقدت التفاتها

حفيظة عهدي لا فقدت التفاتها

إلي فتبدو في الحشى وتلوح

إلي فتبدو في الحشى وتلوح

She who guards my covenant—may I never lose her attention

My loyal beloved never lost her attention to me,

To me; then she appears within my heart and shines.

Appearing to me in my innermost thoughts.

حظيت بها بعد الفنا في وجودها

حظيت بها بعد الفنا في وجودها

وقد كان لي منها هناك فتوح

وقد كان لي منها هناك فتوح

I was favored with her after annihilation in her being.

After annihilation, I gained her existence,

And there, from her, came spiritual openings for me.

And from her here I attained great openings.

حميدة فعل بالجميع وإنما

حميدة فعل بالجميع وإنما

يرى السوء من عنها لديه نزوح

يرى السوء من عنها لديه نزوح

Her conduct toward all is praiseworthy; only

She did good to all, though the wicked

One who is estranged from her sees evil.

See but evil, for from her they fled away.

حياة وعلم قدرة وإرادة

حياة وعلم قدرة وإرادة

غبوق لنا منها بها وصبوح

غبوق لنا منها بها وصبوح

Life and knowledge, power and will—

Life, knowledge, power and will,

Are our evening and morning draughts, from her and through her.

Gifts we gained through her at dawn's first light.
