فتدركوا من لفظه حرفا

Do you know pure nonexistence,

Do you know absolute nothingness

so as to grasp a letter of the word for it?

So that you grasp from its word a letter?

لا تحسبوا معناه مفهومكم

لا تحسبوا معناه مفهومكم

معناه شيء عنكمو يخفى

معناه شيء عنكمو يخفى

Do not think its meaning is what you conceive;

Do not think its meaning is your understanding -

its meaning is something hidden from you.

فكيف تدرون الوجود الذي

من عدم صرف هو الأخفى

How, then, do you know the existence which

So how can you know existence, which

is more hidden than pure nonexistence?

Is more hidden than absolute nothingness?

وهو الذي نعنيه في وحدة ال

وجود لما نذكر الوصفا

And it is what we mean by the unity of

It is that which we mean by the oneness of

existence when we mention the description.

Existence when we mention an attribute.

إن الوجود الصرف إطلاقه

إن الوجود الصرف إطلاقه

كالعدم الصرف لمن وفى

كالعدم الصرف لمن وفى

Indeed, pure existence in its absoluteness

Indeed, absolute existence in its attribution

is like pure nonexistence for one who is faithful.

Is like absolute nothingness for one who is faithful.

كلاهما من حيث نفساهما

كلاهما من حيث نفساهما

تساويا فانعطفا عطفا

تساويا فانعطفا عطفا

Both, with regard to their own essences,

Both, in themselves,

became equal, and so inclined toward one another.

Are equal, so they are turned in the same way.

تقابلا واجتمعا عندنا

تقابلا واجتمعا عندنا

في عدم الإدراك إذ ينفى

في عدم الإدراك إذ ينفى

They stood opposed and came together, in our view,

They opposed and came together for us

in the absence of apprehension, since apprehension is negated.

In the nothingness of perception, for it is denied.
