Do not blame me: listening to music gives sustenance.
Blame me not for listening, when it brings
And it gives life through its sweetness and brings death.
Life with its sweetness, death with its stings.

And it is a door to a house of great mystery,
It is the portal of a mighty king—
a house of truth, whose wall is steadfastness.
The house of truth, its walls strong settings.

Fragrant breaths from unseen realms appeared;
Whiffs from the unseen world break through
its scrapings scattered musk among us.
The scent of musk breathes life anew.

And to the ignorant, a foul odor
Foul winds on the ignorant blew;
wafts from it: sulfur, to them.
Near them it kindles fires unrightful.

Those to whom jest and sport are law

Election and votes no whit can draw.

is an animal by nature, not a human,
Mere beasts in nature, though living, nah—
and he is alive, but in truth dead.
In truth they're dead, deny it they may.

How lovely, how lovely, listening to songs,
Blessed, thrice blessed the songs I sing,
and the chant to which I was invited!
The melodies to which I cling!

Men sway to it in rapture,
They make men in rapture sway and swing
like branches to which the east wind said, 'Come!'
Like boughs when gales of spring are blowing.

Especially when the frame drums are being struck,
The tambourines sound out their beat,
and the pipes are not to be missed.
The lutes make music sound so sweet.

And the reed flute's mouth blows through front teeth;
The pipes with thrill each heart-string greet—
from it the Life-Giver, the Death-Bringer, shone through us.
All life from its breath is flowing.
