إنما نحن ربنا في شئونِهْ

إنما نحن ربنا في شئونِهْ

ناظرتٌ عيوننا بعيونِهْ

ناظرتٌ عيوننا بعيونِهْ

We are but our Lord in His manifestations;

our eyes gaze through His eyes.

يتجلى بنا ونحن كواوٍ

يتجلى بنا ونحن كواوٍ

أضمرت بين كاف أمرٍ ونونِهْ

أضمرت بين كاف أمرٍ ونونِهْ

He manifests Himself through us, while we are like a wāw

concealed between a command’s kāf and its nūn.

كم له في بطوننا من ظهور

كم له في بطوننا من ظهور

وظهور لنا به في بطونه

وظهور لنا به في بطونه

How often He manifests in our hiddenness,

and we manifest through Him in His hiddenness!

يا لحيٍّ إذا بدا فيلاقي

يا لحيٍّ إذا بدا فيلاقي

كلُّ حيٍّ حياته في مَنونه

كلُّ حيٍّ حياته في مَنونه

How wondrous the Living One! When He appears,

every living being finds its life within its death.

وإذا لاح قادراً أو مريداً

وإذا لاح قادراً أو مريداً

بان تحريك عبده في سكونه

بان تحريك عبده في سكونه

And when He shines forth as powerful or willing,

His servant’s being moved is revealed within his stillness.

حدثوني يا أمة العشق فيه

حدثوني يا أمة العشق فيه

عن محيَّا ليلى وعن مجنونه

عن محيَّا ليلى وعن مجنونه

Tell me, O people of passionate love for Him,

of Layla’s face and of His Majnun.

كل نفس مرهونة بدعاوى

كل نفس مرهونة بدعاوى

ذاته والصفات أسر ديونه

ذاته والصفات أسر ديونه

Every soul is held in pledge by the claims

of His Essence and attributes, in bondage to debts owed Him.

صبغة الله في الشئون فخلوا

صبغة الله في الشئون فخلوا

عاشق الوجه حائراً في جنونه

عاشق الوجه حائراً في جنونه

God’s dye is in the manifestations; so leave

the lover of the Face bewildered in his madness.

وصفوا في صفاته فصفاتي

وصفوا في صفاته فصفاتي

لا أراها بأنها من دونه

لا أراها بأنها من دونه

And speak of His attributes; as for my attributes,

I do not see them as being apart from Him.

هي لي تارة به وله بي

هي لي تارة به وله بي

مثل نهر يدور في مَنْجَنُونِه

مثل نهر يدور في مَنْجَنُونِه

They are mine at times through Him, and His through me,

like a river turning within its waterwheel.

عدم كلنا وذاك وجود

عدم كلنا وذاك وجود

لكن الأمر ظاهر بفنونه

لكن الأمر ظاهر بفنونه

We are all nonbeing, and that One is Being;

yet the matter is manifest in its varied forms.

والذي قام فيه بالنفس فانٍ

والذي قام فيه بالنفس فانٍ

مضمحلٌ يقينه في ظنونه

مضمحلٌ يقينه في ظنونه

And whoever subsists within it through the self is perishing,

his certainty dissolving amid his conjectures.

وعليه تلبَّس الأمر حتى

وعليه تلبَّس الأمر حتى

ليس يدري صوابه من لُحُونه

ليس يدري صوابه من لُحُونه

And the matter grows confused for him, until

he cannot tell his right from his wrong.

هو إلا مضمون علم قديم

هو إلا مضمون علم قديم

فليجل بالوجود في مضمونه

فليجل بالوجود في مضمونه

He is but the content of eternal knowledge;

so let him roam through existence within its content.

إنك الإعتبار منه فكن يا

إنك الإعتبار منه فكن يا

وردة كالدهان عين شئونه

وردة كالدهان عين شئونه

Indeed, you are a conception derived from Him; so be, O

rose like oil, the very essence of His manifestations.

لا تكن خارجاً بنفسك عنه

لا تكن خارجاً بنفسك عنه

لا ولا داخلاً به في حصونه

لا ولا داخلاً به في حصونه

Do not be outside Him through your own self,

no, nor inside His strongholds through Him.

أنت لا شيءَ وهو شيءٌ عظيم

أنت لا شيءَ وهو شيءٌ عظيم

فاشتغل بالوفا لفكِّ رهونه

فاشتغل بالوفا لفكِّ رهونه

You are nothing, and He is something great;

so devote yourself to repayment, to redeem what He holds in pledge.
