عيونeyes العلاeminence نحوtoward السعيدthe fortunate one نواظرُgazing
عيون العلا نحو السعيد نواظرُ
ومنصبهand his station فيin حضرةthe presence of العزglory فاخرُsplendid
ومنصبه في حضرة العز فاخرُ
The eyes of exalted glory gaze toward the blessed one;
The eyes of eminence gaze toward the fortunate one,
and his dais, in the court of might, stands magnificent.
And his station is splendid in the presence of glory.
وللكونand existence has معنىa meaning دقis too subtle عنfor فهمthe understanding of عارفa knower
وللكون معنى دق عن فهم عارف
تشيرpoint إليهto it الباطناتthe hidden things الظواهرthe manifest things
تشير إليه الباطنات الظواهر
The cosmos holds a meaning too subtle for a knower’s grasp,
And existence has a meaning too subtle for a knower's understanding;
to which the inward realities and outward forms all point.
The hidden yet manifest things point to it.
ومعنىand a meaning لمعنىfor a meaning ليسis not معنىa meaning ومالهand it has no
ومعنى لمعنى ليس معنى وماله
سوىother than الكونexistence معنىa meaning وهوand it للعقلto the mind باهرdazzling
سوى الكون معنى وهو للعقل باهر
A meaning of a meaning is no meaning; and it has
And a meaning for a meaning is no meaning, and it has no
no meaning besides the cosmos—it dazzles the intellect.
Meaning other than existence, and it dazzles the mind.
يناديكit calls to you ياO مدهوشbewildered one لوif only كنتyou were سامعاًlistening
يناديك يا مدهوش لو كنت سامعاً
فتلهيكso they distract you عنfrom ذاكthat النداءthe call الخواطرthoughts
فتلهيك عن ذاك النداء الخواطر
It calls to you, bewildered one, if only you could hear,
It calls to you, O bewildered one, if only you were listening,
but passing thoughts distract you from that call.
Yet thoughts distract you from that call.
وكنتand you were بعيداًfar away ثمthen جئتyou came فلمand then not تكنyou existed
وكنت بعيداً ثم جئت فلم تكن
لأنكbecause you عنwith respect to معنىthe meaning of القصورlimitation لقاصرsurely falling short
لأنك عن معنى القصور لقاصر
You were far away, then came; yet you were not—
And you were far away, then you came and were no more,
for you fall short of the very meaning of limitation.
Because you surely fall short of the meaning of limitation.
ومنand from تحتbelow تحتthe below of التحتthe below عنديI have إشارةa sign
ومن تحت تحت التحت عندي إشارة
إلىtoward فوقabove فوقthe above of الفوقthe above والغيرand others حائرbewildered
إلى فوق فوق الفوق والغير حائر
From beneath, beneath the beneath, I have a sign
And from below the below of the below, I have a sign
pointing above, above the above—while the other stands bewildered.
Toward above the above of the above, while others are bewildered.
إذاif قلتI utter حرفاًa letter جاءcomes معنىa meaning لهاto it وإنand if
إذا قلت حرفاً جاء معنى لها وإن
سكتI fall silent بموجamid the waves of البحرthe sea تبدوappear الجواهرthe jewels
سكت بموج البحر تبدو الجواهر
When I utter a letter, a meaning comes to it; and if
If I utter a letter, a meaning comes to it; and if
I fall silent, the jewels appear amid the sea’s waves.
