A full moon shone in the dusk,

Above a bough watered with beauty.

    سكرت منه فلم تفق

    And minds are lost in love with him;

They grew drunk on him and never sobered.

    His breezes perfumed my garden

When they came bearing fragrant scent.

And my heart is filled with passion for him

Always, while my eyelid is sleepless.

And my patience, on the day of his estrangement,

Did not remain, while longing for him remained.

A wanderer, a lovesick lover, full of burning anguish—

All paths were barred to him.

    غيرها في القلب لم يرق

    A flash from him swept him away;

Nothing else found favor in his heart.

Then it passed around the cup of his wine,

So today he is drowning in it.

And it stirred the fragrance of his garden

Among humankind—blessed is whoever inhales it.

How could I not strut in delight,

When the fair-faced one embraces me?

So ask my eye, for within it

Is a glimpse from within the pupils,

That I gained from the radiant beauty of one

Whom creation could not bear, were he to appear.

Then taste what remains in my mouth

Of the remnants of every devout person's wine.

This is my ear: it has indeed heard

The sweetness of that voice—so steal a listen.

And ask my nose, for there has wafted

Into it the sweet scent of dawn's breath.

O sons of my people, hear my story

Of my heart's burning anguish and my unrest.

And look toward me; if hidden be

The sun of my being, then behold my twilight glow.

All that you know consists of veils,

For the fortunate and the wretched among humankind.

And beware, concerning God, of stopping

At anything that appears on the horizon.

    أي جمع غير مفترق

    For all created beings are trials;

    What gathering does not disperse?

All pass away, every one of them,

Then sin remains upon the neck.

And beware of worshipping an idol

That a thought carved and that endured.

Exalted is my Lord in His transcendence

    Beyond all existences, utterly unbound.

So hasten, and erase the letters on

The sheet of paper in your possession,

    Before death appears to you,

Taking what remains of life's breath.

And tread the paths of salvation according to

The faith of Taha, pure in character.

    Then follow after his example,

And walk by it in orderly fashion.

And offer a prayer for me, and ask

For safety tomorrow for one in fear.

And may God's blessing be everlasting,

    With peace that never fades,

Upon him whose lights shone forth

And transformed the hue of dusk:

Ahmad, the chosen one, our master,

Through whom my heart found its desire,

As long as creation's Maker appears to it

Behind a veil of pure, brilliant white.
