The self’s dot above the ʿayn—the Eye—of God

The self's dot above God's ʿayn (essence)

Renders it unseen by the law of mistaken likeness.

Has made it unseen through confusion.

فهو عين بنقطة النفس غين

فهو عين بنقطة النفس غين

حائل بين شمس نور الله

حائل بين شمس نور الله

For ʿayn, with the self’s dot, becomes ghayn—

So He is ʿayn; with the self's dot, ghayn—

A veil between you and the sun of God’s light.

A veil before the sun of God's light.

فانسب النفس منك لله خلقاً

فانسب النفس منك لله خلقاً

وافن عنها به ودع كل لاهي

وافن عنها به ودع كل لاهي

So ascribe the self within you to God as His creation;

So ascribe your self to God as His creation,

Through Him, deny it all independence, and leave every heedless one.

And be effaced from it through Him; leave every heedless one.

واعرف الخلق هكذا وهو أمر

واعرف الخلق هكذا وهو أمر

لمع برق ودم على الإنتباه

لمع برق ودم على الإنتباه

Know creation in this way—and this is the divine command.

And know creation thus: it is a matter of

Lightning flashed; remain ever alert.

لا تعد للجمود ذلك وهم

لا تعد للجمود ذلك وهم

غالب فيك وهي إحدى الدواهي

غالب فيك وهي إحدى الدواهي

Do not lapse back into stagnation—that is a delusion

Do not return to rigidity; that is a delusion

Prevailing within you, one of the direst afflictions.

Prevailing within you, and it is one of the calamities.

يا ابن قومي إني نصحتك فاسمع

يا ابن قومي إني نصحتك فاسمع

قول من كان آمراً وهو ناهي

قول من كان آمراً وهو ناهي

O son of my people, I have counseled you; now listen

O son of my people, indeed I have counseled you; so hear

To the words of one brought to fruition, who warns you—

The words of one who enjoins and forbids,

ظاهراً باطناً به لا بنفسٍ

ظاهراً باطناً به لا بنفسٍ

وتحفَّظ من حب مال وجاه

وتحفَّظ من حب مال وجاه

Outwardly and inwardly, through Him, not through any self.

Outwardly and inwardly, through Him, not through a self.

Guard yourself against love of wealth and prestige;

And guard yourself against love of wealth and status.

تكن الكامل الذي هو فرد

تكن الكامل الذي هو فرد

جامع غير رتبة غير ساهي

جامع غير رتبة غير ساهي

Then you will be the Perfect One, singular and unmatched,

You will be the perfect one, who is unique,

All-embracing, beyond rank, and never heedless—

Encompassing more than one rank, not heedless;

تابع للرسول وارث علم

تابع للرسول وارث علم

للنبيين زائد الفضل باهي

للنبيين زائد الفضل باهي

A follower of the Messenger, heir to the knowledge

A follower of the Messenger, heir to knowledge

Of the prophets, abounding in grace, resplendent.

Of the prophets, abounding in excellence, radiant.

وهو الله لا سواه بغيب

وهو الله لا سواه بغيب

ليس تدري به عقول الشياه

ليس تدري به عقول الشياه

And He is God—none but He—within the unseen;

And He is God, none other than Him, in an unseen mystery

The minds of sheep cannot comprehend Him.

That the minds of sheep do not comprehend.
